Background

With just a four-year production life, the Triumph TR4 might be a rare beast, but it’s a good ‘un and it was a genuine step-change for Triumph, being considerably more modern than the TR3 it replaced.

As a result, the TR4 was well received by both the press and public alike - and even enjoyed some sporting success on the track.

The TR4’s simple mechanicals, lovely lines, and lusty performance make it one of the most iconic British sports cars, which bodes well for its future performance as an investment. But if you hope to make money out of old cars you do need to invest in the very best, which is where this example comes in.

Overview

Imported from California as a rust-free car, the TR4 was subjected to a restoration by a specialist firm to bring it to the condition you see it today.

The car has never been used since the work was completed, making this a rare opportunity to buy what is essentially a newly restored Triumph TR4.

Exterior

The largely rust-free bodyshell was stripped, soda-blasted and then rebuilt with new OEM parts where necessary including a new floorpan and sills. The underside was painted with the same care as the bodywork and the car has a sound chassis.

British Racing Green is a wonderful colour but it can be a bit old-fashioned and, dare we say, passé. However, inject it with a little metallic flake and it becomes evocative but thoroughly modern, so we applaud the TR4’s owner for being bold and bringing this car bang up to date while retaining a nod to its illustrious past.

All new or re-chromed brightwork sets off the beautiful coachwork, and the whole ensemble is topped off with brand new lamps and a new hood.

Interior

The interior was careful reassembled using a new dashboard, switchgear, carpets, and door rubbers.

It also benefits from a few carefully selected updates including modern Cobra seats and an updated radio/cassette player complete with iPod connector.

Mechanical

It would have been a crime to bolt rusty, standard mechanical components to what was then a rust-free, freshly repainted bodyshell, so he didn’t.

This TR4 has been sympathetically updated to a more useable specification including an alternator that still looks like the original generator, an unleaded head on a fully rebuilt engine and gearbox, a stainless steel fuel tank and exhaust system, high-performance petrol pump, Cupranickel brake pipes on a servo-assisted braking system, electronic ignition, and alloy wheels.

A new rear axle was fitted, as was a complete clutch assembly. The suspension and braking system were also rebuilt.

The result is a car that looks wonderfully period but performs more like a modern car. It should also prove to be significantly more reliable than anything that slavishly apes 1960’s British engineering…

History

The car comes with a full record of its extensive restoration.

Summary

This TR4 is ready for its new owner to enjoy and use making it the ideal way to treat yourself at the start of 2017.

We have guided the car at £25k which is a fraction of the cost of restoration, making it a savvy purchase for the classic British sports car enthusiast that wants a car to be able to use reliably.
