“ Massive Luxury Transporter - Modified Rear Window Unite - No Reserve ”

It's said that just over 500 examples of the Phantom V were produced, making it a rare car, especially given that this number was achieved in over a decade. At an estimated $30,000 and $40,000, this 1960 Rolls Royce Phantom V isn't just a rare car but a very special one, too. As a flagship Rolls Royce, it's filled with features, its overall condition is nothing short of impressive, and with its V8 engine, one can be sure of enjoying top-class motoring without anything slowing them down. Except for the chunky hydraulic drum brakes, of course.

Background

The little hiatus after the Phantom IV was to end with the arrival of what was essentially a replacement for the aging Rolls Royce Silver Wraith. This car would be on sale for nearly the entirety of a decade and would find space on the drive of prominent personalities (from monarchs to well-known faces from the film and music industries). But with less than a thousand examples produced, the Rolls Royce Phantom V was far from common. And no surprises there, as at about £10k when new in its home country, it was a fair bit more expensive than even the Silver Cloud.

Overview

Given the limited production, finding a Phantom V isn't going to be as easy as walking into a used Rolls Royce dealership — even if you had extremely deep pockets. Although the 5LAT20 (chassis code for the car) might just be what you're looking for. It's a 1960 Rolls Royce Phantom V, finished in a stylish exterior and interior combination, with 42758 miles on the odometer, and complete with all the bells and whistles one would expect it to have. You can read more about the car's condition in detail below.

Exterior

There's no doubt the Rolls Royce Phantom V was a symbol — of success and great taste. The 1960 example sports the pre-facelift design with conventional dual headlamps. This was appointed on Phantom Vs till a midlife update came in the early '60s. While exact details of the build aren't available, as you can see in the photo gallery below, this example has blind rear quarter lights — quarter windows removed.

Upon closer inspection, both the bodywork and paint seem to be good. There's some damage on the front-left fender, a blemish on the rear right door, some scratches, etc. None of this appears to be major, though.

Interior

A lot on the Rolls Royce Phantom V was shared with the Silver Cloud II, but the only major difference was of course that the Phantom V was more accommodating. It could be specced to seat up to seven people in total. The 1960 example here has an even bigger focus on luxury. The central divider extends into what appears to be a wine compartment. There are AC vents at the rear, an onboard telephone, electric controls, and even a separate cassette player. The boot has a CD changer and the foldout jump seats from the cabin. The seats all around look decent, largely damage-free, and very inviting. There's only some use-related wear in the cabin, visible on the wood veneer.

Mechanical

The Rolls Royce Phantom V had a lot in common with the Silver Cloud II, a longer wheelbase and, it was understandably heavier, too. But with a 6.2-liter V8 engine and 4-speed automatic gearbox, there was always more than adequate power to chauffeur the Phantom V's occupants in absolute comfort — without compromising on speed, either.

History

The Phantom V wasn't launched immediately after the Phantom IV; it replaced the Silver Wraith in 1959 and remained on sale till 1968. It was launched alongside the Silver Cloud II, with which it shared its platform. A facelift in the early 60s (for '62 cars onwards) brought along the slightly updated V8 engine and a quad-headlamp exterior. There were a few versions available; this one is by Park Ward, whereas the facelift one was by HJ Mulliner, Park Ward.
