Background

The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a front engine all-wheel/front-wheel drive sports car built from 1990 to 2000. Manufactured in Nagoya, Japan, the car was marketed in the Japanese domestic market as the GTO, and the 3000GT globally. Mitsubishi unveiled the car to compete with the Mazda Cosmo, Nissan 300ZX, Subaru SVX, and the Toyota Supra. The car dropped the GTO name internationally because Mitsubishi was concerned auto enthusiasts would object to GTO name, known primarily with the Ferrari 250 GTO and Pontiac GTO, being used on a Japanese car.

Overview

This specific 3000GT is a VR-4, the most powerful of any 3000GT built is one of 287 examples built for the model year. It sports a DOHC 24-valve V6 engine with twin turbos making 320 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. The 1997 to 2000 models got visual upgrades including a new aggressive front bumper, headlights, turn signals, sail panels, and a true inverted airfoil spoiler coined the “Combat Wing”.

It shows to have been driven only 168 miles from new which is consistent with the CarFax on file. The car was in dealer inventory until it was sold to the current owner on September 5th, 2002. The vehicle has never been registered so remains on MSO. A copy of the original purchase document is on file and in the gallery below.

Exterior

The vehicle has been kept in excellent condition. All the shut lines are tight and even. The chrome wheels still show very nicely as well. There are very few scuffs, blemishes, or marks to report aside from a few stone chips here and there. The paint shows no significant damage, although it could use a proper buff and detail which would bring the paint right back to life.

Interior

The inside of this 3000GT has been maintained just as well if not better than the exterior of this car. The black leather seats are the only things that show signs someone has even sat in the car before. The seats are lightly creased. Everything else looks to be in excellent condition. The dashboard and gauges are in impeccable condition. There’s still a dealership tag hanging out of the glove box and there is still plastic on the floor of the back seat. The front fender and both doors retain the original VIN stickers. We can’t make any claims about the functionality of the car’s knobs, switches, dials, levers, and buttons as we haven’t started the vehicle to test the electrics.

Mechanical

In general, the undersides seem to be well preserved, undamaged, and structurally sound.

We’ve seen nothing more than an entirely standard bloom of superficial rust dust anywhere.

The engine bay is very full but clean and dry. The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter 6G72 DOHC V6 was factory rated at 320 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque, which is delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

History

This car is essentially a 0 owner car. It was bought wholesale from a dealer in Indiana by the current owner in 2002. The car has likely sat in the seller’s collection completely unbothered for the last 19 years.

Summary

The 3000GT is easily one of the coolest Japanese sports cars built during the 90's and enthusiasts recognize it for what it is: one of the finest sports cars Mitsubishi ever built and a far cry from what they build in the present day. If you are even remotely interested in this car, you should recognize that you will be hard-pressed to find a 3000GT in the excellent condition this one is in. This is a rare opportunity to theoretically be the first owner of a car that is over 20 years old. With Japanese sports car prices on the rise, you might secure this obscure car at a great price and you just might even be able to watch it appreciate too, if you take care of it as good as the seller has.

It should be noted that this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Please note that the title for this vehicle is in transit.
