2008 Mercedes-Benz CLS 320 CDi

This is a 2008 CLS 320 CDi with 40,462 miles on the clock and a full service history from new. The colour is Mauritius Blue with a black leather interior. It comes with two keys and a full complement of service and owner handbooks. It’s also fitted with a light AMG body kit, exhaust system and alloy wheels.

Fully loaded is an understatement as it comes with air conditioning, climate controls, sat nav, radio and CD player, steering wheel controls, remote central locking, alarm, immobiliser, electric and heated seats, height adjustable steering column, electric windows and mirrors (the latter fold), cruise control, front fog lamps, parking sensors and light sensitive lights – and breath (phew!). Oh, and air suspension.

We know it might be stretching the case to describe this as a classic, but it has been consigned by a regular customer, is of low mileage, nice colour and high spec and therefore of interest to our bidders.

The colour name Mauritius Blue conjures up sensuous images of a glorious sea under a similarly coloured sky. The reality in Blighty is that you’ll probably step out under thunderous looking grey clouds, unleashing a torrent of rain.

One thing is clear, you’ll never tire of seeing this in front of you. It really is such a stunning colour – enough to brighten your mood, no matter what our wonderful island decides to throw at you.

You’ll have to look long and hard to find anything to grumble about here. The panels are remarkably free of marks; even the bonnet and front bumper have remarkably few stone chips of note.

Swage lines are pin-sharp and large expanses of metal (like the roof, bonnet and flanks) are merely an excuse for your eyes to get lost in that lovely sea of blue.

The only minor issue we can see is that the leading edge of both rear arch lips are showing a little surface corrosion, so we’d suggest the next owner has these tidied up after purchase to nip that in the bud. Its AMG body kit lends it a soupcon more aggression than a standard 320 CDi.

That’s complemented by 19” AMG alloy wheels present nicely, although there’s a kerb mark or two – nothing that a reasonably priced refurbishment won’t smarten up. Tyres are a bit mix’n’match, albeit quality brands, with a combination of Pirelli and Falken rubber.  

Purchasers of second-hand cars really are spoiled in this day and age. Just look at what you get, for what equates to a relatively minimal outlay. Inside, there’s a profusion of beautiful black leather (the front seats look barely used, never mind the rears!), an unmarked headlining, delicate chrome-rimmed dials and taupe-coloured wood dashboard and inlay panels.

All door shuts and sills are as clean as Michael McIntyre’s comedy routine – and just like him, you know your mother would love this car. Lovely, lovely and lovely sums up this cabin. And we have that everything we have touched has worked well.

Pop the huge bonnet and it’s a case of ‘V’ for victory underneath, with the plastic engine housing denoting the diesel V6 engine’s layout in silver. It really is supremely clean under here, with just a touch of surface rust on one or two screws and fastenings stopping it from achieving perfection.

How does it drive? The answer is, as well it looks. It starts immediately, settling into a lovely smooth tick over. The adjustable air suspension all functions, rising and dropping at all four corners as it should. On the move it’s a pleasant and indulging affair, with a smooth ride, torquey engine and nice positive power-assisted steering. You may expect a trade off in ride comfort from those sleek looking low-profile AMG alloy wheels, but it isn’t too harsh and only jars occasionally on poorer surfaces.

This 320 CDi’s history file is short, sharp and to the point; as such you get all of the original owner’s manuals and handbooks. Of course most important of these is the service schedule history, which shows a total of eight stamps. The first six of these were carried out at Mercedes-Benz main dealers, with the last two at independent specialists.
