PLEASE NOTE THAT AN AUCTION PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED, ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE, OF 5% (+VAT IN UK AND EUROPE). FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE MIN €720 / MAX €7,200.

The Mercedes-Benz 300SE came with the new ‘Fintail’ body style introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1959.

The 300SE featured the 2,996cc, Bosch fuel-injected, six-cylinder all-alloy engine producing 170bhp (DIN), an output sufficient to propel the big, luxury saloon to around 200km/h, or 195km/h when equipped with the optional four-speed automatic transmission.

The 300SE was the company’s most prestigious model until the arrival of the 600 ‘Grosser Mercedes’ in 1963.

It was, from the outset, a very expensive and exclusive car. At more than twice the price of an E Type Jaguar, it is perhaps not surprising that only 5,202 had been sold when production finished in 1965.

The ‘Lang’, a saloon-based stretched wheelbase 300SE, appeared in March 1963.

Just 1,546 ‘Lang’ 300SEs were ever built.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer. If exporting immediately to another country, then tax/duty will only be paid in that country.

The winning bidder will pay €500 customs charge on top of the ‘hammer’ price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display in the Middle East for a number of years and the only history or paperwork available is displayed in the photo gallery. In all cases the papers shown are photocopies unless otherwise stated. We do not have the original paperwork.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. The car is not registered anywhere.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released until full payment received.

All storage charges (€30 + local VAT per day commencing from the sixth day following the auction end) must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation. Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, [email protected].

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, this 1986 LHD auto Mercedes-Benz 300SE Limousine comes with no history or service records beyond whatever is shown in the documents section.

However, it does come with copies and originals of old Austrian and Swiss registration documents, and an (incomplete) service book with numerous stamps in it covering it from new (when it was delivered to its first owner in Berlin) until 1986, when it had recorded 64,417 kms on the odometer.

It also comes with what appear to be proof of history/authenticity documents issued by Mercedes-Benz.

It has 70,949 kms on the odometer today.

We believe it was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in 2019, at which time it was living in an Austrian car collection and had covered 70,183 kms.

This car seems to have travelled around a fair bit, with various documents suggesting that it has lived in Berlin, Hamburg, Lugano, Thayngen, somewhere in Austria and, perhaps most surprisingly, Brentford in England.

Wherever it’s been and whoever has been looking after it, one thing is certain: this car is in absolutely fabulous condition.

The car doesn’t start or run at present (but it does take power to the dashboard and the engine turns over), so our appraisal of it is entirely based on its cosmetic appearance.

You will see from the photographs that the car’s rear wheels are splayed out at an unusual angle and the car is sat very low.

We wondered about this and took a close look at the car’s suspension which, much to our surprise, turned out to be an after-market air-suspension system.

We can’t be sure but we believe that once the engine is up and running, the car will pump up the air suspension and the wheels and ride height will return to normal.

Exterior

The car has a dark blue roof and pale blue body. It is, by any measure, a very attractive vehicle and it presents very well from every angle.

The bodywork is excellent all round, with all panels, panel gaps and shut lines consistent and even.

There are no dinks, dents or creases of any significance and the paintwork, too, is in very good condition.

The chrome work and wheels are also impressive, as is the badging, trim and most exterior fixtures and fittings.

The sun roof fits flush with the bodywork and works as it should.

There is a bit of chrome trim lifting up on the driver’s side front wheel arch.

Interior

It’s an equally commendable picture on the inside.

The blue velour upholstery is comfortable, functional and in very strong condition.

Like the carpets, it could do with being cleaned, but everything is intact and largely free from any damage worth mentioning.

The white headlining looks fine, as do the door cards and the wood inserts on the dashboard, the door cappings and elsewhere.

The carpets are missing in the rear.

The boot is in excellent condition.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the car.

Mechanical

The clean, dry engine and engine bay look fine and the undersides of the car appear to have plenty of structural integrity.

History

This car comes with no history or service records beyond what is shown in the gallery.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

No documents shown in the gallery in any way constitute any kind of licensing or registration certification unless otherwise stated.

Summary

This car is from the golden age of Mercedes-Benz when they over-engineered everything to the maximum. It is solid, sound and thoroughly sorted, as far as we can tell.

Provided, of course, that the engine, electrics and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning, we think this could well prove to be one of the best examples of a 300SE ‘Lang’ you could hope to find anywhere.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €15,000 - €20,000.
