Background

Launched in December 1979 and spanning a 13-year production run, the W126 has one of the strongest production runs of any generation of S-Class.

The ‘S’ was derived from the word ‘sonderklasse’, meaning ‘special class’. If the ‘S’ was appended with an ‘E’, then the car was fitted with fuel injection, or ‘einspritzung’.

If it was further appended with an ‘L’, then it was the long (or ‘lang’) wheelbase model.

The W126 S-Class is becoming increasingly sought after, and is justly famous for its exceptional build quality and longevity.

Overview

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax on top of the winning bid price.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the documented history available is limited to that displayed in our photography section.

We have not tried to start or drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released to the buyer or transporter immediately after the sale. For all enquiries relating to Customs, please contact CARS Europe BV.

Purchases will only be released once cleared funds are received. All vehicles must be collected after the payment of funds. All storage charges must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Storage charges payment must be arranged with the storage company. Collection is strictly by appointment only.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles, the car comes with no history or service records.

It entered the vendor’s collection in 2012.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this LHD auto 1982 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE appears to be in very good overall condition.

The odometer reads 23,534 kms.

The chassis number is WDB12602212053618.

Exterior

The beige paintwork has held up very well and the car looks very handsome from every angle – except one. There is a dent that runs across both passenger-side doors and has some accompanying scuffs and scratches above and below it.

That dent aside, the bodywork is otherwise free of any dinks, creases or folds and shows no signs of rust that we can see.

The chrome work, lights, lenses and badging are all as they should be.

The rubber trim is in decent order.

The wheels also look to be in very good condition.

Overall, the car presents well and is a testament to the skills of the people who built it.

Interior

The interior of the car is in equally good condition and has a light patina that’s more in keeping with its low kilometres than its age.

The cream-coloured upholstery has only minimal creases to show for its long life and the only flaws we can see are a couple of grubby marks on the rear seat.

The wood veneers are rich and glossy throughout, if a little dirty on the centre console.

It’s a similar story with the carpets and mats, which although in need of a decent clean, are undamaged as far as we can tell.

The door cards seem to be in good order.

The parcel shelf is home to an impressive-looking array of Blaupunkt sub-woofer speakers.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides of this car look to have a good deal of structural integrity from what we can see.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Provided that the engine and mechanicals prove to be as good as the rest of this fine vehicle, this Mercedes-Benz 280 SE should reward its next owner with years of very classy, over-engineered motoring pleasure.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €4,000 - €6,000.
