Background

"It's one of the world's most luxurious cars. In fact, only the Rolls-Royce Phantom comes close. It can carry a driver, front passenger and up to three rear passengers on a serene, silent and spacious journey." – Autocar magazine on the Maybach 57 S.

The revived Maybach brand began in 2002 with the launch of the Maybach 57 and 62: two high-performance luxury saloons that, inevitably, incorporated a good deal of contemporary Mercedes-Benz technology. The model designations were derived from their approximate lengths: 5.7 metres and 6.2 metres, respectively. Both were powered initially by a 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine.

An enhanced version of the 57 - the 57S, for 'Special' - was launched at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show and featured a 6.0-litre, 604bhp V12 from the group's Mercedes-AMG division.

According to Autocar magazine: "Incredibly, it is not so much the engine's massive power that gives the 57S its character, more the endless reserve of torque, which swells to 738lb/ft at just 2000rpm to provide the Maybach with devastating off-the-line and in-gear acceleration."

A base price of €381,250 ($417,402) ensured that only a privileged few would get to experience the 57S's incredible performance at first hand.

VIN: WDB2400771A002862

Odometer: 2,079 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history. It does, however, have one stamp from a Maybach main dealer in its service book. It’s not dated, but the car is recorded as having 2,029 kms on its odometer at the time.

We understand that the car was bought for the vendor’s collection of static display vehicles in August 2013.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to drive this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic condition, we think this 2011 Maybach 57S is, in every respect that we can think of, more or less as good as new.

Exterior

This car looks excellent from every angle.

The ‘Antigua White’ paintwork is in fine condition overall.

The panels are straight and even. The panel gaps and shut lines are crisp and consistent.

The chrome work, wheels lights, lenses and badging are all as they should be.

There are one or two small scuff marks on the rear wing on the passenger side and also on the front door on the same side.

There is a small scuff half-way up the driver’s door and another on the front bumper just under the grille.

Interior

The interior of the car is in equally impressive condition and looks like it belongs to a car that was built yesterday.

Yes, there are one or two scuffs on the base of the front seats and the edges of the door cards, but these should yield to a damp cloth and are no more than indicators of the ingress and egress of feet on a few occasions.

The ‘Vesuvius Black’ perforated leather upholstery is very good and seemingly untroubled by time or use, both front and back.

The door cards, headlining, curtains, carpets and mats look like those you’d expect to find in a car with so few kilometres on the odometer.

The fridge in the rear, we think we can safely say, has never played host to a cheese and pickle sandwich or a can of cola.

The carbon-fibre inserts are all looking good.

The boot keeps up the same high standards as the rest of it and contains a spare wheel and some Maybach tools.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t driven the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides of this car are every bit as fresh and undisturbed by time or use as the bodywork and interior.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records beyond what is shown in the photography section.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are as good as the rest of this extraordinary car, then we think this is as near as you can get today to buying a brand-new Maybach 57S – without incurring the cost of a brand-new Maybach 57S.

We’re confident to offer this marvellous car for auction with an estimate of €140,000 - €200,000.
