Background

Introduced in 1966 at the Turin motor show, extremely utilitarian but incredibly cute, the Ranger was based on Fiat running gear with an 18bhp two cylinder Fiat 500 engine in the back and independent suspension taken from the 600D, fitted into a tiny light weight body that could seat 4 and cover most terrain, but despite appearances it isn’t aquatic, although 2 passers-by asked while taking the pictures.

It wasn't a huge seller though, with just 600 produced and only around 50 survivors.

Overview

The current owner of the Ranger was lucky enough to be given a ride in one some years ago and had been after one ever since, finding this example for sale in Italy in 2015, where it had been on show as part of a static collection for a number of years.

Pictures in the car’s history file show it suffered some rear end damage whilst still in Italy a few years ago which was repaired to a very high standard, and is now impossible to tell any work has been done.

It is now in superb cosmetic and mechanical condition but getting very little use so the owner has decided to part with it.

Exterior

The yellow bodywork is more than a little attention grabbing. The paint is excellent with a smooth finished and deep gloss, there are virtually no marks or chips to report and the panels with their incredible curves are unblemished by dings or corrosion. The body work consists of simple shaped metal, painted body colour on the inside. The black fabric roof poppers off the folding frame and the door side panels lift out. All of these are in great condition, the hood material is dark black and in superb shape with no damage and the windows clear.

There are only two doors, reverse hinged and opened with a latch on the top of the inside edge, they can fold back flat against the side or lift off entirely, and the windscreen can fold flat across the bonnet. The rear view mirror and single windscreen wiper are mounted to the top rail of the window.

The chunky but tiny all terrain tyres have good tread on them, and the spare, mounted on the engine cover under a black vinyl cover, was new when the car was bought and has never been used.

Interior

The interior is as basic as they come but is almost as new inside. Most surfaces are metal and painted body colour yellow, with rubber matting on the floor and simple black vinyl seats, the rear bench folds flat to create more load space, all is in fine condition, there are just a few tiny paint chips on the very edge of the lower dash metal.

There are only two dials, the speedometer and rev counter and a few simple warning lights. The fuel gauge is very traditional, taking the form of a wooden dip stick! The indicator and main beam light switch is more fancy, being shared with a Ferrari.

Although there is no boot area, there is a locker behind the drivers seat, which holds the battery and original Fiat toolkit. The current owner rewired much of the car and added a 12V socket under the dash.

Mechanical

Being fairly high from the ground and with big open wheel arches its easy to see under the car and into the Fiat suspension, to see the solid condition of the underbody which has been undersealed and the good condition of the yellow paint, although there is a little overspray on couple of suspension parts. The shock absorbers look recent and the suspension components are in very good condition, and the bottom of the 499cc engine can be seen and there are no signs of fluid leaks from the motor.

History

Having been almost unused but dry stored for some time the car arrived in superb condition but needed some light recommissioning. The spare tyre was replaced, the owner found it uses the same tyres as a Suzuki RV90 off road bike making replacement easy.

During 2016 he went through the car making it perfect and ironing out any issues from being unused. A new Weber IMB 26 carburettor and fuel pump were fitted, the brakes rebuilt with two wheels getting new drums and cylinders and the fluid reservoir changed for a new item, the starter motor was replaced and the speedo overhauled, and to make the rev counter work a drive cable added to the distributor drive changed for an Arbath version.

Summary

Almost as impossibly rare as it is adorable, you can't help but like this tiny and fun off roader. However, this is not a car for the shy or introverted as this is possibly the most attention grabbing vehicle we’ve ever seen.

The overall condition of the car is excellent inside and out and it runs very well, starting and idling easily and being based normal Fiat running gear maintaining the car is very easy.
