Background

Launched in 1970 the Ghia-designed Deauville was created to compete with cars such as Jaguar's XJ12 and Maserati's Quattroporte, although it actually shares a chassis with the Quattroporte III.

Powered by a 5763cc Ford Cleveland V8 engine and Ford three-speed automatic transmission, the car boasted all-round independent suspension and disc brakes.

The vehicle was claimed to be capable of getting to 100 km/h in about 7.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of around 233 km/h.

Only 244 cars were ever built.

The car we have with us is a Series 2 variant.

This car is offered from outside of the European Union. It has been imported under temporary admission customs bond and is therefore subject to Dutch import tax (9%) on top of the winning bid price. Cars less than 30 years old will pay 10% Dutch import tax plus 21% VAT on the hammer.

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their proof of purchase.

This vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and the documented history available is limited to that displayed in our photography section.

We have not tried to drive the car, and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality.

It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

As CARS Europe BV is the guarantor of all customs duties and taxes for vehicles within Dutch customs bond, the car cannot be released to the buyer or transporter immediately after the sale. For all enquiries relating to Customs, please contact CARS Europe BV.

Chassis No: 892THDVTD02050

Engine No: 351/185

Odometer: 42,229 kms.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

We understand that this LHD auto De Tomaso Deauville was registered new in the Netherlands in 1979.

It was bought from a private Swiss seller for the vendor’s collection in 2014.

The notes accompanying the 2014 sales listing are as follows (we have done our best to translate from the somewhat confusing facsimile of a document we have).

“Rare De Tomaso Deauville (only 244 cars) with automatic gearbox…with specifications of the late second series (the last), the main change of this series being that the engine was moved about 10 centimetres towards the cabin for better weight distribution. This is a preserved car, never restored, 100% original. Body is clean without important rust. Paint needs some work on the doors. Interior is original with natural patina. Mechanicals are in top condition (many recent works with invoices available).

It’s really nice to drive – engine powerful, sweet gearbox, no noises or problems.

Also, the electric components (air conditioning, power windows, etc) work as they should. Soon we will start to work on me body and the paint of this car to get the perfect condition.”

We do not know what, if any, work was carried out. We do not have the invoices referred to in the text.

The car is in reasonable condition overall but has more corrosion and rust in evidence than referenced above.

Exterior

This is a stylish and good-looking car and it generally presents well.

The grey metallic paint is fairly good and, apart from a dent in the front passenger side door, the bodywork is largely untroubled by dinks, creases, folds or ripples.

The bodywork panels are straight and even. The panel gaps and shut lines are pretty crisp and consistent.

The chrome work is decent. The Campagnolo wheels have been painted silver and would surely benefit from being refurbished. The badging, lights and most external trim and fixtures and fittings are OK.

There is significant bubbling at the base of all four doors, plus some bubbling beneath the windscreen and on the boot lid.

There are a few scratches on the bonnet and the driver’s side wing mirror is dangling loose.

Interior

The interior of the car tells a similar story in that it is good in parts and less so in others.

The black leather and grey velour upholstery looks a little tired and grubby but should clean up reasonably well and is intact and serviceable, bar some small holes in a few places.

The leather is creased and a little worn on the driver’s seat bolster and the central armrest. It is also scuffed and worn on the centre console around and above the gear selector.

The top of the dashboard and the rear parcel shelf are stained and discoloured. The headlining is OK but needs cleaning, as do the door cards.

The carpets and mats are, literally, moth-eaten in places.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t started or driven the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides of this car show some evidence of rust in the sills.

Everything in the engine bay is in its right and proper place and seems to be clean and dry, if a little dusty.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records beyond what is shown in the photography section.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

Summary

Provided that the engine and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning, this rare car should have more than enough underlying quality and rarity to make it a worthwhile and satisfying job to restore it to its former glory.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €16,000 - €24,000.
