It’s fair to say that when you think of Alfa Romeo, vans and trucks aren’t the first type of vehicles that come to mind. But sure enough, whilst also turning out a succession of sublime berlinetta and berlina from the Giulietta of 1954 right up to the 33 in 1983, Alfa were also making the Autotutto or “all purpose” vans and trucks.
The first iteration in 1954 was known as the Alfa Romeo Romeo… no, really! This was followed by the creatively-named Romeo 2 and Romeo 3 before the introduction of the F12 and A12 in 1967.
F stood for “Furgone”, or van, which included minibus variants and A stood for “Autocarro” - light truck. The 12 indicated the load rating of 12 quintali or 1200kg. Both were powered by Alfa’s 1300cc twin cam engine - detuned to 52 bhp - until an unpopular Perkins diesel option appeared in 1973.
Neither power plant was especially fast, only just topping 70 mph, but they were capable enough that over 17,000 vehicles were built over the three decades of production.
