Background

Launched globally as a 750cc in 1985, the GSX-R has grown into one of the most famous and significant Japanese sports bikes of all time. Inspired by their factory endurance racer, the GSX-R set a new standard for lightweight, fully faired, high-revving four cylinders. It was an instant success on both road and track settings and spawned a whole family of sports bikes.

In 2005 Suzuki released the GSX-R 750 K5. Today, it is revered as the greatest iteration of the motorcycle to date. The 750 K5 benefits from a revised brake system that addressed the issues of the previous example.

Its 750cc engine produces 145hp at 12,800rpm and 64 ft-lb of torque at 11,200rpm. This is more than enough to push you down the road at a rate of knots.

Today this sports bike is still incredibly capable and will make an amazing addition to your collection.

Overview

With so many iterations of the legendary GSX-R, you’re almost spoilt for choice. However, if you distil down all of the reviews you come to one conclusion, and that’s that the 2005 GSX-R 750 K5 is the version to have.

The current owner has loved this bike since 2005 and has carried out some minor modifications to the exterior look. Race fairings have been fitted, the lights have been removed, and a stunning Rizla livery has been applied. An accomplished rider, they have taken this bike on a few track days during their ownership and have enjoyed every second of their tenure with this K5.

Although there is no headlight or rear light it still complies with MOT rules and can be used on the road during daylight hours. It’s on the racetrack where this bike will excel. It is currently fitted with track-biased tyres (that are perfectly street-legal).

Exterior

This GSX-R stands out from the crowd thanks to its period Rizla livery. Based on Suzuki motorsport outfits at the time, it looks incredible in the sunlight and manages to brighten everyone’s day.

When the vendor had this paint job carried out in 2006, he specified the striking blue and yellow livery. However, the sprayer was a little flamboyant and decided to put in an amount of gold fleck into the blue paint. Thanks to this, the paint sparkles in the sunlight and looks amazing.

All of the transfers on the exterior were also professionally applied in a process that took many hours to get just right.

This paintwork still looks stunning today and managed to attract several admiring looks during the photoshoot.

At the front you’ll notice that this bike is headlight-less. Instead, a smoothed-out fairing will help with the aerodynamics and the large nostrils will force lots of air into the engine. Across the rest of the bike, you’ll find a lot of other race fairings.

Other sport/race items on the exterior are the Pro Mach foot pegs/chain guard and the Akrapovic exhaust (which sounds incredible).

Although it has no front headlight or rear lights it is still road legal. It has a daytime use only MOT which, as the name suggests, allows you to ride in the daylight hours. This has all been done to create a monster of a track/road bike.

Overall, the exterior of this GSX-R K5 is in incredible condition. The odometer shows a little more than 2,000 miles and the exterior condition reflects this. Its eye-catching racing livery makes it stand out, and it will look great both on the road and on the track.

Interior

Turning our attention to the more tactile and interactive parts of this GSX-R we can see that they are not only race-inspired too, but also in great condition.

The seat has been removed and replaced by a lightweight section of foam that still provides ample cushioning for those push laps on the track. This foam section is presented with no areas of damage and looks like it’s hardly been sat on.

Travelling up the bike you’ll notice the slight chin rest/dimple of the top of the tank. A lovely little feature that means you can tuck right up and stay out of the airflow, perfect for those fast rides out. This tank section also presents with no scratches or other damage.

A little further up you’ll find the most important part of the ‘interior’, the handlebar section. Here you’ll find the rubber grips which are in great condition, as are the clutch and front brake levers.
You may have spotted the little red button on the left grip. This intriguing little button may excite you, but alas, it is just the horn button. Which is needed for the MOT.

The final section of the rider area is the instrument binnacle. Once you have completed the de-arming of the alarm you can turn the ignition on and start to wake the bike up. When the bike fires into life no warning lights are shown, and the neutral light illuminates as it should. The digital odometer also shows a mere 2,218 miles completed.

Overall, the internal sections of the GSX-R are in great condition and it’s just waiting for you to hop on and go for an exhilarating ride.

Mechanical

As we have previously mentioned, the K5 iteration of the GSX-R is still thought to be the best version. This is mainly thanks to the engine and chassis that create a great riding experience.

Suzuki put the previous K4 version on a diet and came out with the K5. By shaving a millimetre here, and a gram there the K5 managed to weigh in at only 163kg dry. With 145hp on tap that is almost a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio, which is staggering.

On the engine side the liquid-cooled, 749cc four-cylinder was fitted with newer lightweight titanium valves. Suzuki also fitted lightweight forged pistons with a chrome-nitride-coated upper compression ring with oil control rings for reduced friction. This is a great engine and sounds amazing when revving through the Akrapovic exhaust.

To help pull the bike to a stop from its top speed of 186mph (limited by the factory) Suzuki fitted two Tokico four-pot calipers on the front and a single two-pot Tokico caliper on the rear.

The current owner has left this bike completely stock when it comes to the mechanical side of things. They have used this bike both on the road and on the track and enjoyed every mile.

On the day of the photos, the bike fired into life at the press of the button and idled as it should. We only heard a few short blips of the throttle and it sounded like an angry swarm of bees. Just imagine what it’ll sound like when you’re using all of the revs.

History

The current owner acquired this bike back in early 2006 and has cherished it ever since. Shortly after acquiring the bike, it was turned into what we see before us, a road/track GSX-R 750 K5. With race fairings fitted and the striking Rizla livery applied in 2006, it has seen some use since.

The paperwork for this 750 K5 includes the V5, a couple of MOT certificates, and an invoice from 2007 which references the work carried out to get it through a day-time only MOT. It currently doesn’t have an MOT. It is also worth noting that the included HPI check shows the bike as a Category C write-off in 2005. It was subsequently professionally rebuilt by a Suzuki specialist, who was also an ex-World Superbike mechanic.

Summary

What an incredible opportunity we have for you here with this GSX-R 750 K5. You have the chance to acquire one of the best Suzuki sports bikes that is ready to explore the roads and tracks of the world.
If you’re seeking a new thrill in 2024 then this GSX-R is the best choice for you. With so few miles on the odometer and an amazing livery, it’ll be the best decision you make this year. We estimate that it will sell for £4,000-£7,000.
