Background
Following on from the iconic status of the 5 GT Turbo in the ‘80s Renault needed a halo car for the ‘90s, and that came in the shape of the Clio Williams. It took the muscle car formula of a big engine in a small body but added arguably the best handling suspension of any hot hatch of the era - Evo still rates it with 5 stars.
The Williams came about as a homologation special as Renault wanted to go rallying in the 2 litre class, and needed 2500 cars, but soon sold far more.
It borrows the front subframe from the Cup Racer and has uprated springs and shocks and thicker roll bars, and the 150bhp engine gave outstanding performance, which the blister box arches and bonnet vent give not to subtle hints at.
