Background

The concept of a neo-classic car, or a new-production model fitted with coachwork inspired by automobiles of the 1920s and ‘30s, was first imagined by a very forward-looking man.

A pioneer in the field of Industrial Design, Brooks Stevens was a cultural force in Postwar America, and his vision greatly contributed to the look and feel of the 1950s–not only its cars, but its appliances, tools, logos, and advertising.

The world’s first “contemporary classic”, as Stevens termed it, was a Studebaker show car. Built atop a Lark Daytona convertible chassis and featuring fiberglass bodywork inspired by Ferdinand Porsche’s 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK proto-supercar, the 1963 Excalibur was like nothing else on the road.

Despite overwhelmingly positive reception, Studebaker declined to produce the Excalibur, but within a year Stevens had formed his own company to satisfy demand. Since then, neo-classics have been built by a number of manufacturers, among the best-known including Mitsuoka and Zimmer.

Overview

The auction car is based on a 2007 Lincoln Town Car, and has accumulated fewer than 150 miles from new. Each Golden Spirit is custom built to order, but prices are believed to have started in the $150,000 - $175,000 range when this example was new.

Established in 1978, Zimmer first built the Golden Spirit on lengthened Fox Body Mustang chassis, and according to most sources, the company continues to produce 10-20 cars per year.

Exterior

The auction car is based on a third-generation Lincoln Town Car, and retains a good deal of its steel bodywork including the roofline, trunk lid, and doors. Fenders, bumpers, lights, and much of the car’s trim including its triple spare tires, faux external exhaust pipes, radiator shell and grille, and Golden Eagle hood ornament are custom Zimmer items. The hood is split into two pieces by a longitudinal hinge in the style of the 1920s and ‘30s, and like the fenders it’s made of fiberglass.

The car’s wheelbase has been extended by quite a bit, achieved by pushing the front wheels toward the nose, and making for a pronounced front-mid-engined layout. Wheels themselves are high-quality Dayton wire items.

Interior

The interior features Zimmer Golden Spirit embroidery on all four seats, but otherwise appears to retain mostly standard Lincoln fittings. The Town Car was luxuriously equipped even on base models, and this example features optional items like heated rear seats and audio controls.

Wear appears to be very limited in accordance with the car’s low mileage figure.

Mechanical

The car’s engine and drivetrain are standard Lincoln as well, with a smooth, torquey 4.6 liter V8 delivering 239 hp to the rear wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Town Cars ride superbly well with a standard wheelbase, but with what looks like more than an extra foot between its axles, this Golden Spirit should be even more comfortable at speed.

History

This car is sold with limited documentation, though this is largely explained by its equally limited use. Sale includes the original MSO or Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, window sticker, and factory manuals.

As with all Zimmers, and due mostly to reasons related to safety and emissions certification, the auction car is titled under the donor car’s year, make, and model.

Summary

Zimmers are rare and unusual in any form, but with fewer than 150 miles from new, this 2007 Golden Spirit is especially noteworthy. We gather the company still builds Mustang-built two-door cars today, but with suitably large, V8-powered, RWD luxury donor platforms essentially extinct, four-door neo-classics may never be seen again.

Estimated $15,000 - $30,000.
