Background
Soon after Volkswagen introduced its Type 1 Sedan (Beetle) based Type 2 Transporter in 1949, Germany’s Westfalia company designed and prototyped its now-famous pop-up roof camper system. A wonderful way to travel, equipped with dual-purpose seating/sleeping surfaces, kitchenettes, and the airy comfort of a pop-up roof allowing some stand-up room, Westfalia-equipped VW buses are the gold standard by which camper-van conversions are judged today. Combine their utility and quality with an avant-garde, counterculture persona, and you have a useful postwar motoring icon the whole family can enjoy.
Volkswagen’s original Transporter generation was relentlessly developed and improved from introduction in 1949 through 1967, followed by the updated T2 generation models, sold from 1968 through 1978. Sometimes known as the ”Bay Window” body style, the T2 continued to epitomize traditional Volkswagen virtues including affordability, durability, economy, and versatility, with these models enjoying the same popularity as their forebears today.
