“ Wonderful Vintage Camper - Well Loved & Beautifully Maintained ”

This 1976 Volkswagen 2 Type Westfalia Campmobile represents a rare opportunity to purchase a highly authentic, classic camper in an extremely desirable, factory original, nostalgia-inducing color with practically every feature it came with when new still intact. Top it all off with some comedic royalty provenance, and you have a winning combo that'll keep you endlessly talking shop with ogling admirers at campgrounds and car shows from coast to coast and everywhere in between.

Background

Soon after Volkswagen introduced its Type 1 Sedan (Beetle) based Type 2 Transporter in 1949, Germany’s Westfalia company designed and prototyped its now-famous pop-up roof camper system. A wonderful way to travel, equipped with dual-purpose seating/sleeping surfaces, kitchenettes, and the airy comfort of a pop-up roof allowing some stand-up room, Westfalia-equipped VW buses are the gold standard by which camper-van conversions are judged today. Combine their utility and quality with an avant-garde, counterculture persona, and you have a useful postwar motoring icon the whole family can enjoy.

Volkswagen’s original Transporter generation was relentlessly developed and improved from introduction in 1949 through 1967, followed by the updated T2 generation models, sold from 1968 through 1978. Sometimes known as the ”Bay Window” body style, the T2 continued to epitomize traditional Volkswagen virtues including affordability, durability, economy, and versatility, with these models enjoying the same popularity as their forebears today.

Overview

If this visually striking, Taiga Green (L63H) Westfalia Campmobile looks familiar, it's the actual vehicle selected by comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld for “Stick Around for the Pope,” otherwise known as Episode 1 from Season 8 of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” Transporting Seinfeld and comic Jim Gaffigan through downtown Manhattan traffic while they hilariously discussed the challenges of show business and the search for the ultimate Pastrami sandwich, the VW also provided an ideal park-side home away from home for the beloved comics to discuss life and family.

Offered with approximately 65,840 Seller-stated miles at the time of listing, this T2-generaton 1976 Volkswagen Transporter Campmobile features the renowned and extremely versatile Westfalia camper conversion with that highly respected German company’s signature tilting “pop-up” roof/bunk bed setup.

Exterior

Appropriate late-1970s Taiga Green paint and white bumpers with bumper guards, plus polished wheels/hubcaps, Westfalia-specific accoutrements, and that signature air-cooled, flat-four exhaust note make this fun and funky VW a true standout wherever it goes. Paint is understood to remain largely original, save for some selective touch-ups required from camping use that were performed under the prior owner circa 2012. Indoor storage and caring owners ensured this “Westie” continues to look great throughout.

Interior

Featuring undamaged and fade-free, era-correct green and black plaid upholstery front and rear, the interior of this wonderful “Westie” simply must be experienced to be believed. The original dash remains amazingly crack-free with the factory VW 'Saphire XI' radio still intact. Camping accoutrements include the requisite countertops and drawers, freezer, sink, and propane stove, which has not been connected or used under the current ownership. This Campmobile offers a highly versatile and usable experience with sleeping quarters underneath the “pop-up” roof cap, which is complete with new canvas material and the correct hardware for usage. A folding rear bench seat performs double duty as a second bed, and thoughtful storage spaces round out the Westfalia’s enjoyable multi-purpose open-concept interior layout. According to the Seller, only minor imperfections – to be expected of a 45-year-old classic camper are present. The horn and all exterior and interior lights are also stated to work properly. Original German retractable seat belts thankfully remain in place.

Mechanical

The prior owner, an enthusiastic multiple air-cooled VW owner, related that his search for a solid, sound, and enjoyable Westfalia Campmobile ended with this exceptionally original example from 1976. Thanks to the longevity of the original undercoating, most of which remains in place, the van’s body panels, floors, and structure have been thoroughly inspected by our Seller, who advises they remain original and rust-free, in his opinion.

Powering this VW Bus is a single-carburetor 2.0-liter (1,970cc) air-cooled VW “Flat-4” engine installed under the prior ownership. Understood to retain all original “tins” and seals, this mill is also reported to run cool, being capable of propelling the Campmobile to a useful 60-65 mph speed range with relative ease. The 4-speed manual gearbox/rear transaxle combination is stated to shift and operate well, supported by a new clutch, again installed under previous ownership.

History

Acquired by the Seller in 2016 and relocated to California from New Hampshire, this Campmobile was the culmination of a lengthy and demanding search for a high-quality and highly authentic example of these iconic and fun adventure machines. According to our consignor, this Westfalia Campmobile is a decided blast to drive and a constant attention magnet everywhere it goes, never failing to attract requests for rides from new friends along the way. The Seinfeld/Gaffigan connection only enhances the mystique of this wonderful “T2” Westfalia Campmobile from 1976.

Summary

This 1976 Volkswagen 2 Type Westfalia Campmobile represents a rare opportunity to purchase a highly authentic, classic camper in an extremely desirable, factory original, nostalgia-inducing color with practically every feature it came with when new still intact. Top it all off with some comedic royalty provenance, and you have a winning combo that'll keep you endlessly talking shop with ogling admirers at campgrounds and car shows from coast to coast and everywhere in between.
