Background

The Silver Shadow was quite a leap forward for Rolls-Royce, encompassing lots of new technology such as the firm’s first use of unibody construction, disc brakes, independent rear suspension, and even a licensed version of Citroën’s fabulous hydraulic suspension system.

These improvements make Silver Shadows and their many derivatives (including Bentley’s T-type as well as various R-R two-door, convertible, and LWB cars) equally satisfying to drive or be driven in, with ride quality and refinement that impress even when judged by modern ultra-luxury standards.

Overview

Factory long-wheelbase cars were badged Silver Wraith II from 1976, and provide rear seat passengers an additional four inches of legroom over what was already quite a generous amount in the standard wheelbase Silver Shadow.

One of 2,135 built by hand, the auction car is quite a scarcity.

Exterior

Standard Wraith II features such as the Everflex vinyl roof and smaller “formal” rear window are easily spotted, though a closer look may be needed to spot the car’s additional four inches of wheelbase and rear door length.

At the nose, topped by the famous Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament, the traditional R-R grille is made up of 11 separate pieces of stainless steel, and took a single, highly skilled worker more than a day’s work to solder and polish for final fitment.

Interior

Wood veneers, hides, headliner, and carpets present nicely, and the beautiful dashboard is tightly packed with heavy metal switchgear, attractive analog gauges, and large, mirror finish swivel vents.

All driver interfaces are engineered to feel effortless, and operating the superbly slick automatic gear selector in an R-R product of this era is a pleasure of its own.

Mechanical

Advertised by R-R merely as “adequate”, a certain amount of horsepower is provided by the 6 ¾ liter V8 and delivered rearward via a smooth and robust GM-sourced automatic transmission.

A high-pressure hydraulic system provides assistance for steering and brakes, as well as springing, damping, and leveling for the suspension. Just as with similarly equipped Citroëns, these Rollers truly offer a magic carpet ride.

History

This car is sold without known history.

Summary

Even ignoring its wonderful color combination and rare LWB specification, this car would stand out for what appear to be very nicely preserved cosmetics throughout.

Estimated $8,000 - $12,000.
