Background

The Silver Shadow was quite a leap forward for Rolls-Royce, encompassing lots of new technology such as the firm’s first use of unibody construction, disc brakes, independent rear suspension, and even a licensed version of Citroën’s fabulous hydraulic suspension system.

These improvements make Silver Shadows and their many derivatives (including Bentley’s T-type as well as various R-R two-door, convertible, and LWB cars) equally satisfying to drive or be driven in, with ride quality and refinement that impress even when judged by modern ultra-luxury standards.

All proceeds for the sale will go to The Rolls-Royce Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Overview

One of two similar cars originally delivered to New York, as detailed in an included, fascinating package of factory documentation, the auction car is one of only 2,772 LWB Silver Shadows made prior to 1976, around the time Rolls introduced the Silver Shadow II and renamed LWB cars ‘Silver Wraith II’

Representing only 6.8% of Silver Shadow production, LWB cars are today among the scarcest and most desirable examples built. The car's bodywork and paint were performed by the students at the Pennsylvania College of Technology.

Exterior

A long-wheelbase car as identified by its four-inch greater length, the auction example features the Everflex vinyl roof and smaller, more formal rear window that were standard LWB spec–customers could optionally specify the steel roof and larger rear window of SWB cars.

Colors are so-called ‘Black’ and ‘Regal Red’ as recorded in the included, above-mentioned factory documentation. Cosmetic condition appears to be both unmodified and well-preserved.

Interior

Primarily beige Connolly leather was part of the car’s original specification, as was a central divider-free cabin. The latter helps provide rear seat passengers with palatial legroom, though even standard wheelbase cars are quite generous in all interior dimensions. Note the elegant Series I dashboard design, warm, lustrous veneers, thick carpets, and what appears to be original Connolly leather hides.

Mechanical

Smooth, silent running is provided by a Rolls-Royce L-series V8 in traditional ‘six and three-quarter’ displacement. Power should be on the order of 200 hp and roughly twice that figure in lb-ft of torque.

It should be noted that this Rolls-Royce Siler Shadow will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

History

The auction car is sold with limited history, excluding above-mentioned factory documentation visible in the full photo gallery.

Summary

Elegant, exclusive, and offering the unique and inimitable feel of a handmade luxury product, vintage Rollers of this era mix old world atmosphere with modern engineering to deliver a world-class driving and ownership experience. Long-wheelbase cars, such as the one at hand, only add to that list of positive attributes.

Estimated $10,000 - $15,000.
