Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. It went through three iterations during its production run. The Silver Cloud II was introduced in 1959.

Overview

Very little changed externally moving from the Silver Cloud I to the Silver Cloud II, but the engineering is a different story. The Silver Cloud II was given a new Rolls Royce developed 6.2L V8 which dramatically improved performance. This increased the top speed to 114 mph, and greatly increased acceleration as well as torque. Power steering became standard likely due to the new engine bringing the car to a curb weight of 2.1 tons, and electric windows became a potential option.

Exterior

The exterior of this Silver Cloud II is finished in white paint. There are several areas sporting corrosion around the car. The front bumper, front turn signals, driver’s side door frame, rear bumper, and rear license plate mount are all showing signs of corrosion. The aforementioned areas address the visible corrosion, but it should also be noted that every side of the car is experiencing bubbling that is likely also being caused by corrosion hiding and growing underneath the paint. It should be noted that the driver-side door does not close likely because of the amount of corrosion all around the car. Overall, an expert’s eye is not necessary to see how much work this Silver Cloud is going to need. It is certainly a project for the next owner.

Interior

The vehicle’s interior is white with orange accents, and it is quite messy inside. The weather stripping around the driver’s door frame is coming loose, and there is corrosion hiding behind it. The floormats are missing but that is probably for the best as the floorboards are in rough shape and should be seen. There are definite signs of corrosion on the floorboards. The door panels do not match. The wooden dashboard looks as though it was stained unevenly, or more likely very wet at some point. The steering wheel is in nice shape, although the center badge needs polishing. The rear seats show signs of creasing from regular use but there are no visible tears, holes, or cracks in the leather. The wood trim all around the car looks relatively beat up and is clearly lacking a coat of polish. The trunk is filled with miscellaneous parts and looks rather cluttered. This interior is going to need to just as much attention as the exterior gets, if not more.

Mechanical

Lifting either side of the hood reveals a deep, dark engine bay. Several pieces, much like the rest of the car, appear to be sporting some corrosion. Under the body, we see more of the same. The frame sports a layer of corrosion as well.

History

This Silver Cloud was shipped from the United Kingdom in 1959, and the first owner bought the car from a Rolls-Royce dealer in New York City. Original documents say the car was black with a gray interior, which is a far cry from the white outside and light tan inside it sports currently. After that, the trail goes cold for a number of years, but the car pops up again in 2007 with a registration in North Carolina. Years later, the seller acquired this vehicle in June 2012.

Summary

The Rolls Royce Silver Cloud is an absolutely wonderful luxury collector car, this is practically common knowledge. However, it also wouldn’t take an expert to see how much work must be done to this vehicle. There are details all over the car that need to be properly addressed to prepare it for shows, and it is certainly going to take more effort than some good old TLC. Buyer beware, this vehicle could turn out to be a massive undertaking, or a great skeleton for a restomod build. Repair work in mind, we estimate this Silver Cloud’s value to be somewhere between $15,000 and $25,000.
