Background

The Silver Cloud is a luxury vehicle produced by Rolls-Royce between 1955 and 1966. It served as the flagship Rolls Royce model during that period and was built to replace the Silver Dawn. It went through three iterations during its production run. The Silver Cloud II was introduced in 1959.

Overview

Very little changed externally moving from the Silver Cloud I to the Silver Cloud II, but the engineering is a different story. The Silver Cloud II was given a new Rolls Royce developed 6.2L V8 which dramatically improved performance. This increased the top speed to 114 mph, and greatly increased acceleration as well as torque. Power steering became standard likely due to the new engine bringing the car to a curb weight of 2.1 tons, and electric windows became a potential option.

Exterior

The exterior to this Silver Cloud was done in a two-tone gold and black paintjob. The paint is in solid condition and a walk around of the car shows no major damage to the exterior. However, it does appear that the black paint over the trunk has lost its clearcoat, and some of the paint is fading as a result. As far as chips go, it appears that there are two on the passenger half of the front bumper, one on the driver’s front quarter panel, and one on the driver’s door. Chrome around the car is also in decent shape, most of the pieces are clean and straight. However, all four of the bumperettes have definitely seen one or more impacts, and the chrome trim at the bottom of the driver’s side is a little chewed up. Glass around the car is clean, except for the passenger side taillight, which is cracked. Overall, this exterior is in solid condition. It would greatly benefit from some touching up, but no intensive work should be required outside.

Interior

The interior has been quite nicely preserved. The inside has been upholstered with off-white leather on the seats and door panels that appears relatively free of stains. The seats up front show minor creasing, but there don’t appear to be any holes or tears. The rear bench mirrors the front seats, with only minor creasing present and no obvious damage. The carpets are in excellent shape. The rear carpets are much cleaner than the ones up front, but they all show very little damage and lay perfectly flat in their respective positions. The headliner does appear to have some stains, but it hangs tightly in place just like both sunshades. The wooden inlays seem to be the most attractive part of the interior. Wood can be found at nearly every edge of the interior, and every piece looks glossy. The wooden dashboard has no major scratches, and all the gauges mounted within it are clean and easily readable. Overall, it is abundantly clear that the seller to great care in making sure that this interior was properly maintained. Kudos.

Mechanical

We are pleased to report that the underside of this Silver Cloud II has no major damage. The frame and floorboards are solid although a section in the middle does appear to be dealing with some corrosion, the suspension components are all in order, and the exhaust shows minimal discoloration. Under the hood, all the various components look quite clean, and there is no significant damage to note.

History

Based on the documents available to us, we believe the seller took ownership of the car in July of 2012.

Summary

The Silver Cloud and all its various generations are chiefly responsible for Rolls-Royce’s reputation. This is a car that is loved around the world for its handsome styling and oftentimes brilliant ride quality. Today’s example is in great shape. The two-tone paintjob is wonderful, the interior is clean with minimal damage, and for the most part; the underside is clear. We at The Market are highly confident this Silver Cloud II will have few issues hitting its $30,000 - $50,000 estimate.
