Overview

One of 2,595 top-rung, twin-turbo, all-wheel-drive, all-wheel steer VR-4-spec 3000GT’s made for 1993, the auction car is offered for sale by its original owner. It currently displays under 15,000 documented miles, and remains all-original according to the seller.

The car has been exclusively stored indoors under cover, excluding the occasional sunny day drive to keep its mechanicals well-exercised. The car is said to remain fully functional, and to start, run, and drive very well.

Sale includes extensive documentation from new, and excluding an aftermarket electronic boost controller, the car is said to be otherwise unmodified.

Exterior

Only 344 VR-4’s were painted Morocco Red Pearl for 1993.

The auction car retains factory optional chrome 17” wheels with correctly sized 245/45ZR17 rubber, in this case high-quality BFG g-Force Comp 2 all-seasons with fewer than 300 miles of use since mounting.

Front-mounted chin and rear deck spoilers are fully active, automatically deploying above 50 mph and retracting below 30 mph.

Interior

The cabin features original creme leather upholstery, as well as its factory double-DIN AM/FM cassette deck. The VR-4 was very well equipped as standard, and this car’s included window sticker highlights just three options–the tinted glass sunroof, remote CD changer, and chrome-plated wheels. Sticker price was $40,253, or about $83,000 in 2022 dollars.

Note the switch marked TOUR and SPORT, which actually allows the driver to select one of two different exhaust notes–a very cool and unusual feature.

Mechanical

The car features a four-cam, 24-valve, twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V6. Factory power output for early examples such as the auction car was rated at 300 hp and 307 lb-ft, though the aftermarket electronic boost controller fitted here should raise those figures to be at least on par with 1994-1999 examples, which made figures of 320 and 315, respectively.

Max torque arrives at just 2,500 rpm or so, and 0-60 could be reached in about five seconds flat even for bone-stock VR-4’s.

Drive is to all wheels, all the time, and splits torque 45% - 55% front to rear. Four wheel steering, rear limited-slip differential, and electronically-controlled suspension round out the requisite suite of high-end 1990’s sports/GT tech.

History

The car is sold with extensive ownership and maintenance documentation from new, as well as all factory documentation, tools, and accessories.

Summary

The 3000GT VR-4 checked all the classic 1990’s Japanese performance car boxes, including pop-up headlights, turbos, and more tech than the average LaserDisc deck, while blending true GT comforts unrivaled by any of its domestic competitors.

The auction example is likely one of the best left.

Estimated $35,000 - $45,000.
