Background
This car is being re-auctioned due to the previous winner defaulting on the transaction. The default had nothing to do with the car, but the personal circumstances of the bidder.
The fourth-generation E-Class - designated W/S212 internally - was introduced in 2009, and was available in both four-door sedan (W212) and estate (S212) formats, as successor to the popular W211 range of cars.
Right from the outset in 2009, high-performance AMG variants of both models were available for the 2010 model year, boasting a 6.2-litre V8 engine, producing an impressive 518bhp with power sent rearwards via a seven-speed SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission. This is the same powertrain that was used in the critically-acclaimed SL63 AMG, meaning it was well-proven upon introduction.
Elsewhere, the AMG variant received much more comprehensive upgrades compared to the previous-generation AMG-badged model, with a wider front axle, significantly revised suspension, and a more distinct wide-arched body to set it apart from the ‘normal’ models. Capable of a 0-62 sprint in around 4.5 seconds, yet with the ability to return >20mpg on a longer run, the E63 was a truly usable everyday supercar.
In 2011, the 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated engine was replaced by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8, though the power output and figures remained the same, unless the optional ‘AMG Performance Pack’ was specified from the factory.
Notably, whilst the more aggressive body styling allowed the AMG models to be easily differentiated by enthusiasts, it was also beneficial from a performance standpoint, as the additional vents, grilles and air channels improved cooling for the 6.2-litre engine, whilst the flared arches accommodated the wider track (an additional 56mm) of the performance models.
