Background

This car is being re-auctioned due to the previous winner defaulting on the transaction. The default had nothing to do with the car, but the personal circumstances of the bidder.

The fourth-generation E-Class - designated W/S212 internally - was introduced in 2009, and was available in both four-door sedan (W212) and estate (S212) formats, as successor to the popular W211 range of cars.

Right from the outset in 2009, high-performance AMG variants of both models were available for the 2010 model year, boasting a 6.2-litre V8 engine, producing an impressive 518bhp with power sent rearwards via a seven-speed SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission. This is the same powertrain that was used in the critically-acclaimed SL63 AMG, meaning it was well-proven upon introduction.

Elsewhere, the AMG variant received much more comprehensive upgrades compared to the previous-generation AMG-badged model, with a wider front axle, significantly revised suspension, and a more distinct wide-arched body to set it apart from the ‘normal’ models. Capable of a 0-62 sprint in around 4.5 seconds, yet with the ability to return >20mpg on a longer run, the E63 was a truly usable everyday supercar.

In 2011, the 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated engine was replaced by a twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8, though the power output and figures remained the same, unless the optional ‘AMG Performance Pack’ was specified from the factory.

Notably, whilst the more aggressive body styling allowed the AMG models to be easily differentiated by enthusiasts, it was also beneficial from a performance standpoint, as the additional vents, grilles and air channels improved cooling for the 6.2-litre engine, whilst the flared arches accommodated the wider track (an additional 56mm) of the performance models.

Overview

First registered on 28 July 2010 to Mercedes-Benz of Milton Keynes, this fantastic ‘fast wagon’ E63 AMG is a wonderfully practical everyday supercar, boasting blistering performance yet remaining comfortable, composed and refined during day-to-day life.

From the factory, this particular S212 was very highly-specified with a total cost of the options in excess of £13,000.00. A full breakdown is available in the ‘documents’ section of the gallery below, but a few specification highlights include the following:

  1. Rear-view camera
  2. Driving Assistance package PLUS
  3. Autonomous Cruise Control (inc. Distronic Plus)
  4. AMG Drivers Package
  5. Dynamic Multi-Contour Seats
  6. AMG Differential Lock
  7. Night View Assist Plus
  8. Harman Kardon Logic 7 Surround-Sound System
  9. Blind spot assistance
  10. Memory seat package, including mirrors and steering column
  11. Front seat climate control ( Comfort Ventilated )
  12. Panoramic sunroof
  13. Ash tree wooden inserts
  14. Rear seat heating
  15. Enlarged fuel tank

Whilst the specification is undoubtedly a major factor in this car’s appeal, the ownership history is also of particular note. Following its stint with Mercedes-Benz, it passed into the hands of the one-and-only Ross Brawn OBE, ex-technical director of Benetton and Ferrari, and ex-owner of the Brawn GP team, where he later became team principle and co-owner following Mercedes-Benz buying in to the team during late 2009.

Whilst in the care of Mr Brawn, the car was evidently kept in top condition both mechanically and aesthetically, as evidenced by the near-immaculate condition throughout, and the swathes of Mercedes-Benz main dealership invoices in the history folder.

In recent years, the car has passed into the ownership of our vendor, the third registered keeper but only the second private keeper. During this period, the vendor has added a respectable 26,400 miles to the odometer, averaging a scarcely-believable 24.2mpg across this accumulated mileage.

Used as a high-performance and enjoyable daily driver, along with being a practical load-hauler for his automobilia collecting business and hobby, this E63 has proven itself to be a simply sublime way to travel, and has never let the vendor down.

Exterior

With its more aggressive styling, enlarged forged AMG wheels and Tenorite Grey paintwork, this E63 is every-inch the Affalterbach superstar, yet remains subtle enough to fly under-the-radar, especially in more subtle comfort mode, which removes the burbling and cracking from the exhaust on over-run.

Looking along the flanks, we could not see any incidences of any dents, dings or even the ever-prominent ‘car park’ indentations that are sadly so common on cars these days, even those that have been fastidiously cared-for.

The paintwork is of a similarly outstanding condition and quality, showing only the usual light smattering of stone chips commensurate of a high-performance vehicle such as this, with many of these chips having been ‘touched-in’ at some point in the car’s lifetime.

Being particularly picky - as we always try to be - there are a few slightly more noticeable marks, which have all been documented in the gallery below. These are located on the nearside rear edge of the boot, NSR wing, OSR wing and a scuff on the lower offside edge of the front ‘lip’ though this is hidden in day-to-day use.

All of the trims, badges and chrome details are present and correct, and there were no signs of any damage to any of the light lenses or glass that we could see.

All four of the forged AMG wheels display various stages of wear, and would benefit from a refurbishment to bring them back to their best. That said, they are perfectly usable as they sit, and all four are wrapped in high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport rubber - an excellent sign of a caring owner, in our opinion.

Interior

As with the exterior, the cabin of this high-performance wagon has remained virtually untouched by the passage of time or travel, and presents in excellent condition throughout.

The leather seats, for example, show virtually no signs of any wear or usage even after 50,000 miles of enjoyment, with only the most minor creases giving any sort of indication of the seats having been sat in. Both the heating and cooling functions work as they should, and we’re told that the ‘active’ bolsters on the front seats are in full working order.

All of the AMG-branded floor mats remain and are in very good condition, whilst up above there are no stains or signs of wear to the headliner. The panoramic sunroof is in full working order, whilst even the load bay in the rear displays only the lightest signs of wear, and underneath the floor the spare wheel and tool kit are present and correct, even down to the cotton gloves!

The dashboard, high-traffic touch-points, Ash inlays and door cards are all in outstanding condition with virtually no signs of usage wear, and all systems are in full working order.

It should be noted that the vendor has been told that a speed camera detector/radar jammer was fitted to the car and located underneath the dashboard, though it has never been used in the current ownership. A tracker is also fitted to the vehicle, though the next owner will have to take out a policy in their name should they wish for the tracker to remain active.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the 6.2-litre V8 engine presents wonderfully, and has evidently received plenty of care and attention throughout its lifetime, judging by its condition and that of the overall engine bay. Whilst there isn’t much to see in here - on account of the various covers fitted by M-B - we could see no signs of any leaks, misting or other untoward issues.

The story is the same underneath, where our view is largely obscured, but there are no signs of any corrosion that we could see, nor anything beyond the typical light wear expected from a modern vehicle with 50,000 miles on the clock.

Firing up instantly from a cold start with a stirring growl from the V8 engine up front and settling almost immediately into a surprisingly quiet, yet silky-smooth idle, we noticed no untoward issues, behaviours or noises from the engine or drivetrain during our photo shoot, with all systems behaving exactly as they should do.

Whilst in the current ownership, the car has been looked after exclusively by Pentangle Mercedes-Benz specialists of Southampton, with ex-main dealer technicians working on the vehicle and genuine M-B parts used.

The most recent service took place on 24 January 2022 at 50,106 miles, with an air filter and oil/filter service performed, along with an engine flush, fuel additive and overall health check carried out, the paperwork for which is available below.

The current MoT certificate - dated 15 June 2021 and valid until 20 June 2022 - shows a clean pass with no advisory items.

History

Included with the vehicle is a vast file of history, paperwork and documentation, all contained in an orderly fashion within a box file. All of this documentation is available to view below, but highlights include the recent service/health check from earlier this year, the current V5 showing 2 former keepers, an older V5 showing Mr Brawn’s ownership, numerous M-B main dealership and independant specialist invoices, a printed copy of the digital service history, two keys and M-B marketing materials and brochures.

There are also numerous items of certified Brawn GP team memorabilia, which are signed by Ross Brawn and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

Summary

For automotive enthusiasts, few models combine performance and practicality like a fast wagon/estate, and arguably Mercedes-Benz are the best in the game with their AMG models, blending blistering speed and an engaging driving experience with a vast load capacity and everyday usability.

Presented in outstanding condition throughout and benefitting from extensive servicing, cherished ownership and a famous former owner, this 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG would make the ideal daily driver or continent-crusher for any enthusiast or driver, and is offered with an estimate of £25,000 to £35,000.
