Background

Mid-engined cars hold quite a special place in Maserati’s deep history, from the stunning V8 Bora and V6 Merak sisters of the 1970s to the wild, Enzo-based, GT1 homologation MC12, of which only 50 or so were made between 2004 and 2005.

A new trident-badged, mid-engined machine is finally here, and by most accounts it’s a fabulous thing, blending compact, Lotus-like dimensions and agility with legitimate supercar performance.

Overview

Though quite a compact car at just over 15 feet long and four feet high, it’s also as wide as a Ferrari Testarossa at just under 78 inches. Capable of 0-60 in comfortably under three seconds, 0-100 in under seven seconds, and 202 mph flat-out, the MC20 is powered by a 3.0 liter, twin-turbo V6 producing 621 hp.

The auction example is offered by its original owner with 1,075 documented miles from new.

Exterior

The MC20’s styling is function driven and free of extraneous elements, lending the car a very purposeful, pretty appearance. The clear portion of the combination engine/trunk lid (in carbon fiber–a $5,000 option) is vented in a way that evokes Maserati’s famous trident, and doors open out and up in butterfly fashion.

Despite a lack of a rear spoiler or active aero, the MC20 still generates downforce via devices such as a flat bottom, large diffusers, and vortex generators. Note the auction car’s blue brake calipers and optional carbon-ceramic discs (a $10k option) behind “Birdcage” oem wheels.

Interior

The cabin is equipped with more than $11,000 in options including a carbon trim pack, premium sound system by Italian boutique audiophile manufacturer Sonus Faber, and an alcantara-wrapped steering wheel. Seats feature a mix of leather and alcantara, and dual 10.25-inch screens are present–one for driver data and the other, central unit for controlling audio, navigation, ventilation, etcetera.

Mechanical

Like its distant cousin the Alfa Romeo 4C, the MC20 is built around a carbon tub designed and manufactured by Italian motorsports manufacturer Dallara, to which forged aluminum double wishbones and adaptive dampers are hung at each corner.

The all-new “Nettuno” 3.0 liter engine churns out a remarkable 210 per liter, making it the most power-dense V6 currently produced. Capable of 8,000 rpm, the dry sump, quad-cam, 24-valve unit produces 621 hp at 7,500 and 538 lb-ft of torque from 3,000 to 5,500. Tremec produces the MC20’s 8-speed twin-clutch transaxle, a responsive, quick-shifting unit also employed in the C8 Corvette.

History

With such limited mileage, documentation is also rather limited, however the car is sold with all relevant factory books, manuals, and accumulated service records.

Summary

Beautiful, compact, agile, and very, very fast, the MC20 marks a spectacular return to supercar production for one of the world’s most storied manufacturers. With just over 1,000 miles, the auction example is essentially new.

Estimated $275,000 - $295,000.
