“ Desirable Combination - Well Kept - No Reserve! ”

The Jaguar XK-150 is often seen as a more approachable classic in comparison to the preceding XK120 and even the E-Type. Simply put, this Jag presents a chance to own and work on one of the finest cars of its time — one that looks as fast as it leaps (and growls)...

Background

The last from the hallowed 'XK' line of cars, as Jaguar readied the E-Type (or what was known Stateside as the 'XK-E'), the XK150 was a great mix of the peerless panache of the XK120 sprinkled with modern essentials. Of course, it wasn't as 'pure' as the XK120, but even as a classic, experts do agree that the XK150 can be a better car to live with. In the four years or so that it was on sale, the XK150 was sold in respectable numbers: just under 10,000 cars were sold. This included both RHD and LHD versions of all three body styles: coupe (Fixed Head Coupe), convertible (Drop Head Coupe), and roadster (Open Two Seater).

Overview

Listed at Bonhams Cars|Online is a 1959 Jaguar XK150 FHC. According to the odometer, the car has done just under 92,000 miles. It comes with a spare wheel and plaques from the New England XK Association — one that confirms the car's entry to a rally in July of 1973. One can only imagine how different the car scene would've been back then, but we can bet the XK150 would've looked as great!

Exterior

The XK120 had a distinct appeal that even the prettiest cars from its time would fail to match. And the XK150 doesn't lack charisma, either. Of course, in comparison to the XK120, it's had some changes, which to many purists, might seem like corrupting the pure design of the original, but in reality, all of this makes for a great, if slightly more modern, iteration of the XK120. The most notable changes are that the window line isn't as curved as before whereas the simple windshield has made way for a wraparound unit. The hood was wider, complemented by a new grille and flatter fenders. The 1959 example will require some level of paint correction and trim repair. The bodywork looks okay, and the very apt wire wheels do look nice, too.

Interior

Those opting for the FHC or the DHC would've enjoyed the slightly roomier cabin, thanks to the windshield being moved forward by four inches or so. This was complemented by the rear seats on the FHC. The dashboard could be specced in leather and with the centrally located dials, it looked smart. This car needs some level of restoration before it can be brought to a more usable condition. While the seats do demand immediate attention, elsewhere the cabin doesn't look too bad as a starting point for restoration. The boot, which houses a spare wheel, needs work, too.

Mechanical

The XK150 weighed just under 1.5 tons (for the FHC), which was a fair bit heavier than the previous versions. Depending on the model year, powering the car would either be an iteration of a 3.4-liter straight-six or a later 3.8 — max power varied between 210 hp and 265 hp or so. Gearbox choices for nearly the entire range included both manual and automatic units. While the chassis and suspension were largely carried over from the predecessor, the XK150 benefitted from the inclusion of disc brakes on all four wheels as standard.

History

Jaguar's (original) XK line was comprised of the XK120, followed by the XK140, and eventually, the XK150. The final iteration was also more refined, came equipped with disc brakes, and had some visual elements separating it from the earlier models. The LHD Jaguar XK150 in the FHC spec was made between 1957 and 1960.

Summary

The Jaguar XK-150 is often seen as a more approachable classic in comparison to the preceding XK120 and even the E-Type. Simply put, this Jag presents a chance to own and work on one of the finest cars of its time — one that looks as fast as it leaps (and growls)...
