Background
Introduced in 1968, the XJ6 ushered in a new era at Jaguar as the famed British marque’s only sedan in its newly simplified model lineup. Featuring a sleek and unforgettable body design that would assume iconic status with relatively minor updates through 1992, the XJ was produced along three distinct series with power delivered by updated variations of Jaguar’s legendary ‘XK’ DOHC 6-cylinder and 5.3-liter V-12 engines. Throughout its uncommonly long run, the XJ sedans and especially the foundational XJ6 appeared in a multitude of movies and TV shows and served as the vehicle of choice for wealthy and powerful buyers. To the Jaguar faithful, the XJ6 is considered one of the last “true” jaguar models produced prior to the 1989 Ford Motor Company takeover. The XJ6 also remains famous as the final Jaguar model to be designed and developed under the direct influence of Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons.
