Background

The Jaguar 420G served as Jaguar’s flagship saloon car from 1961 to 1970. It began its life as the Mark X before being renamed and was built primarily to serve the United States market. Jaguar hoped the vehicle would appeal to heads of state, diplomats, and movie stars thanks to a number of engineering improvements geared towards making the vehicle a luxury success. The 420G received unitary bodywork and independent rear suspension. The car also received the engine from the E-Type, as both cars were announced simultaneously. All of these advancements together gave the 420G an impressive top speed and fantastic handling for less than half the price of the competing Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.

Overview

This 420G comes with the 4.2-liter engine making it highly desirable among collectors. Only 5,137 420Gs were equipped with the 4.2L, and very few are known to be surviving today. The 420Gs were the last Jaguars to feature extensive woodwork around the interior, including a pair of fold-out rear picnic tables, and a front seat pull-out picnic table stowed beneath the instrument cluster. Introduction of the 4.2L engine meant that other parts of the car had to be upgraded as well. The Borg-Warner transmission went from a DG unit to a Type 8 unit, 4.2 cars also received Marles Varamatic Bendix variable ratio steering boxes. The car has power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes. Air conditioning and sound-proof glass dividers became optional extras.

We are thrilled to report that this 420G comes equipped with the optional sound proof divider. Sources from around the internet believe that only 24 420G limousines featuring dividers were ever constructed. That potentially makes this vehicle far more rare than we previously imagined.

Exterior

The exterior to this Jaguar is finished in a classic British Racing Green. It is a wonderful shade that is evenly applied around the whole car. However, there is some bubbling at the bottom of the driver’s door, and driver’s rear quarter panel. The chrome around the car is straight the most part, with minor problem areas being some scarping at the edge of the rear bumper, and the chrome trim above the passenger side windows coming loose above the windows towards the rear. One of the four wheels has some minor scraping around the rim. Overall, the exterior of this 420G clean with only some minor imperfections.

Interior

The interior is finished in Natural leather. It could use some detailing, but no major overhauling appears necessary. The leather seats up front are heavily creased, and some of those creases are turning into legitimate cracks in the leather. The driver’s door panel is slightly loose. The dashboard and center console are clean; however, moving down from the console, the leather over the central tunnel could use some cleaning up.

Far more important in these 420Gs are the backseats, and we are pleased to report that the back of this Jag is in much better shape than the front. The bench is still heavily creased, but none of those creases have turned into cracks, and there is a small stain on the driver’s side of the bench. Both door panels are tight, the carpets could use some deep cleaning. The wooden inlays in the back are abundant and free of scratches. It is unclear to us if the clock in the back seat is in working order or not, but it is far more important to take note of the divider.

Mechanical

The underside of this Jaguar has been preserved surprisingly well for a 54-year-old vehicle. The wheel arches, floorboards, and mechanical bits are all nice and tidy. Surface corrosion is a common occurrence along the exhaust pipes on any car, but this pipes on this 420G are particularly clean.

History

The vehicle has had multiple owners, although the entire history of the car is not clear. We do know for a fact that in 1973, 1976, 1977 and 1988, the car had different owners; however, all of them were in Ontario, Canada. There is a seemingly Dutch document from 1999, and also from 1999 is a Jaguar-Daimler Heritage Trust Limited certification. It tells us, of course, that the car is authentic, but also that it was manufactured on September 27th of 1968 and shipped out on October 30th of that same year. The seller purchased the vehicle in 2008.

Summary

The Jaguar 420G is a wonderful luxury car from the 60s that never found a major audience. Its handsome styling, great shape, and smooth interior make it a fantastic option alongside Rolls’ from the same era. This specific 420G has little to no issues on the exterior, and some TLC on the inside will easily get this car back into show condition. The sound proof divider is a wonderful addition, and potentially makes this 420G one of only a handful ever built. The 420G may be somewhat obscure, but any avid Jaguar fan should certainly keep an eye on this car.

The Market by Bonhams is thrilled to offer this Jaguar 420G for online auction with no reserve and an estimate between $12,000 and $18,000.
