Background

The fifth generation Mustang debuted in 2005, reintroducing the world to classic ‘Stang styling themes first perfected with Larry Shinoda’s Boss 302 of 1969.

It’d be another six long model years before the fabulous quad-cam Coyote V8 replaced the lackluster 4.6, at which point the retro transformation was truly complete–not only did the 2011 look like a proper Mustang, but with 5.0 liters under the hood, it finally was a proper Mustang.

Overview

This particular 2011 5.0 was converted by GAS, or Galpin Auto Sport, for display at that year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas. A true one-off, the car displays fewer than 1,000 miles and has seen little use in the past decade.

Exterior

Custom orange paint by PPG is unique to this car and was not offered by Ford for standard production Mustangs. Halibrand-style wheels are always a good match for Mustangs, and the folding hardtop roofline suits the car well–we particularly like the pillarless coupe look with top up and all four windows retracted.

The car’s body kit complements its lines well, and overall it looks to be well preserved despite a few bruises accumulated during storage.

Interior

The interior appears to remain almost all standard, excluding some neat orange stitching seen here and there on the seats and door trim panels.

Mechanical

Power comes from Ford’s new-for-2011 5.0 liter Coyote V8, a smooth, free-revving, responsive design featuring 32 valves, four cams, aluminum construction, variable valve timing and many other thoroughly modern engineering specifications. All of its 412 hp are transmitted to the rear wheels via a 6-speed automatic.

Interestingly, these fifth-gen cars were the last to retain a traditional solid rear axle, and thus are often favored by drag racers and muscle and pony car traditionalists.

History

The car is sold with limited documentation, but is well-known within the Mustang community due to its SEMA history.

Summary

The 5.0 Coyote is a stupendous engine that gave the fifth-gen Mustang a new lease on life. This one’s special status and unique folding hardtop make it particularly compelling, not to mention its very low mileage and straightforward, easily maintained mechanicals for which parts remain readily available.
