Background

Founded in 1926 by brothers James and William Welch at a small Milwaukee,

Wisconsin shop, Century Boat Company still exists today as the brand approaches its

100th birthday.

Just two years later Century would relocate about 100 miles northeast to the town of

Manistee, Michigan, which like Milwaukee, was conveniently located on the banks of

Lake Michigan.

While busy fostering a growing reputation for their products’ speed and outstanding

craftsmanship, in 1930 the brothers would clinch the world speedboat record when a

Century Hurricane model topped 50 mph, and by 1937 the company’s catalog swelled

to more than 25 individual boat models.

Beginning in 1950, Century began advertising under the slogan “The Thoroughbred of

Boats”, and though the company has since changed ownership more than once, it

continues to manufacture a wide array of fresh and seawater boats out of Florida.

Overview

Offered in a variety of hull lengths ranging from 15 to more than 20 feet, the Resorter

was among Century’s most popular offerings during the model’s 1950s and 1960s

heyday. The model name survives today, as applied to Century’s modern line of 24’,

fiberglass, dual-console recreational boats.

The subject boat’s medium length is an excellent compromise, offering a desirable

blend of shorter models’ improved agility and larger models’ roomier cabins.

Exterior

Viewed from any angle, in water, dry dock, or on its included trailer, this is a stunning

looking piece of recreational machinery. Contrasting blond and mahogany stained wood

shine deeply, and elegant factory Century-branded brightwork and metal fittings

abound. Scriptwork is particularly attractive, though it’s difficult to pin down a single

visual characteristic as a standout on such a beautiful, cohesive, classically

proportioned shape.

Interior

With seating for up to six divided between front and rear benches, the open cabin is

turned out with highly period-appropriate formica flooring and red and white vinyl

upholstery.

At helm the captain faces a lacquered wood dashboard with more instruments than

most high-end sports cars of the era, including a large, central tachometer flanked either

side by gauges for monitoring coolant temp, fuel level, oil pressure, and charging amps.

Propeller drive is engaged with a central, floor-mounted lever, while the throttle is

operated via a delicate, polished, ivory-handled lever affixed beneath an elegant white

Bakelite steering wheel.

Mechanical

The large, central, upholstered compartment conceals what appears to be the

Resorter’s original engine, a Gray Marine 6-135 flathead straight-six rated for 135 hp

from about 260ci. Note the Century-branded info plaque.

Gray Marine Motor Company was a Detroit-based company in operation from 1910

through 1967, and many of its offerings were marinized versions of standard car

engines produced by GM, Chrysler, and others. It’s difficult to say with certainty, but this

particular boat’s Gray engine does somewhat resemble a modified Chrysler unit.

History

This craft is being offered without known history.

Summary

Whether burbling around on a relaxed lake cruise or pulling skiers fast with the throttle

pinned, piloting a vintage speed boat is a uniquely thrilling experience. This one’s

included and trailer only flatters the boat’s innate good looks, and adds quite a bit of

convenience to boot.
