Background

Aston Martin built fewer than 100 cars in 1993. The Virage–Aston’s only offering at the time–was handsome, fast, and every bit as beguiling as it was exclusive. It was also completely out of sync with the modern world and deeply unprofitable.

A savior was on the way, born of a bizarre and convoluted series of events involving a similarly distressed Jaguar, TWR and the XJ220 production line, Ford, Mazda, and even Citroën. The resultant DB7 was perhaps the prettiest car of the 1990s.

Pulled together with modified Jaguar underpinnings and engines, Ford switchgear, Mazda tail lights and door handles, and with a budget of just $30,000,000, the DB7 honored Aston tradition in being far greater than the sum of its parts. It was also profitable, and remains the most successful model in the brand’s history.

Overview

One of 7,000+ built between 1994 and 2003, the auction example is from the fourth year of production, and like all DB7’s, it was manufactured at Tom Walkinshaw Racing’s former XJ220 factory in Boxham, Oxfordshire.

Exterior

Ian Callum’s work on the DB7 was masterful, producing perhaps the most beautiful car of the era on a paltry budget and tight timeline. Mazda 323 tail lights and door handles are equally at home as MX-5 Miata turn signals and Citroën CX mirrors, looking as if they were designed from scratch for the application at hand.

The auction car appears to remain fully standard from wheels to exhaust tips.

Interior

The interior mixes traditional, hand-crafted Aston touches like burl wood and Connolly leather with a collection of contemporaneous Jaguar and Ford components, such as the steering wheel and switchgear. Note the traditional Aston sill plates.

Mechanical

Power comes from a Jaguar-based, 24-valve, twin-cam, supercharged straight-six rated at 335 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque. These cars were known for strong acceleration, excellent ride and handling balance, and smooth, torquey power delivery–in a nutshell, they’re outstanding GT’s.

History

The auction example has spent time in the Middle East and California and is sold with limited history.

Summary

The DB7 is easily one of the most important models in Aston Martin’s 109-year history, and of course, one of the most attractive as well. Though highly desirable, the DB7 has yet to come under serious scrutiny by collectors, and thus good examples are relatively affordable for the time being. This one certainly looks worthy of consideration. Estimated $16,000 - $22,000.
