Background

The VW Golf was a genuine milestone car that changed the face of family motoring thanks to a lightweight-yet-stiff bodyshell and a series of willing engines that transmitted modest power through one of the nicest chassis the world has ever seen.

That the classic Golf range is currently overshadowed by the mighty GTI is a shame, because the Golf was always more about modest yet accessible performance than outright power, a point this delightful car proves beyond doubt.

Overview

Well known on the VW scene since it was first restored back in 2008, this car has rightly gathered awards and praise over the years for what must be one of the most fanatical restorations we’ve ever seen.

The commissioning owner claims that every single nut, bolt, washer and screw was replaced with either new-old-stock or new components when the car was reassembled, a proud boast that rings entirely true to us.

Exterior

The Golf received a bare metal respray in 2008 in Mercedes Benz Russet Brown, a bold and original colour that works perfectly in our opinion. The paintwork itself was carried out by a VAG dealer and the finish is, as you’d expect, impeccable.

The coachwork is set off by custom chromework, including a pair of new-old-stock bumpers complete with over-riders, wiper arms, fuel filler cap, door mirrors and grille, finished off with new, original equipment badges.

Further reinforcing the owner’s impeccable taste is a single front fog light. Tell me you’ve ever seen a more tasteful use of a solitary light and, unless you’re talking about the rear fog light on this very car, I’ll call you a liar to your face.

Period number plates and a new-old-stock front spoiler consolidate the look.

Interior

That the previous owner took the time and trouble to retrim the low-back seats in brown vinyl tells you all you need to know; while many of us have dreamed of doing something so utterly frivolous, few of us have actually bitten the bullet and written the very large cheque that is necessary to actually commission the work.

And no matter what the retrim cost, it was worth every single penny. The finished interior looks amazing and is so much more interested than simply installing more modern leather seats from a newer car.

The rest of the interior is just as perfect; hell, it’s even got a blanked off gauge in the centre console, just like it had when it rolled off the production line in the mid-seventies. Most of us would have popped an ammeter or oil pressure gauge in there to fill a gap; that the owner hasn’t speaks volumes for the care and attention to detail that has been lavished on this car.

Still not convinced? How about sourcing and fitting the early and rare flat wiper and indicator stalks? Or a chromed mono radio? Or taking the trouble to source and fit a polished handbrake lever, accelerator and brake pedal? Or a 1974 tan parcel shelf? Or matching bronzed glass?

Are you starting to get the picture? This is a very, very nicely finished vehicle.

Mechanical

The 1.5-litre engine is standard and was refreshed in 2008. It breathes through a genuine VAG exhaust and has been comprehensively detailed. As a result, the underbonnet is one of the cleanest you’ll ever see.

The suspension is KW coilovers, tastefully finished off with Exip alloy wheels for what might just be the best stance we’ve seen. NOTE - SOME OF THE PICTURES SHOW THE CAR WITH DSR WHEELS, THESE ARE NOT INCLUDED AND THE CAR IS FITTED WITH THE GOLD EXIP WHEELs.

History

The Golf was voted Car of the Year at the Retro Rides gathering in 2008. ‘Nuff said?

Summary

This MK1 VW Golf is one of the freshest and most obsessive browntastic cars we’ve ever seen, and if you share our love of this seventies’ colour then you’ll adore this Golf as much as we do; that it has been so beautifully finished seals the deal on what might just be the best modified Golf on sale in the United Kingdom today.

The estimate is £7-9k but the reserve is, as always, set at a much lower amount.
