Background
The Astra 888 (or Triple Eight or T8) is probably the most exciting Vauxhall you’ve never heard of. Based on the Astra Coupe, only 100 were commissioned by Vauxhall to celebrate winning the 2001 BTCC race championship. The company Vauxhall chose to build it was Triple Eight Race Engineering, the same guys and gals that had built the racing cars that had dominated the BTCC series throughout the noughties, which was a nice touch.
The showroom price was just £20,995, a clever marketing sleight of hand that saw all one hundred snapped up once buyers realised what they were getting for their money. The 2.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine might have remained in standard tune but that was no hardship as the Old School force-fed four-cylinder unit develops a thoroughly respectable 188bhp, all of which is channeled to the front wheels and tyres via a five-speed manual gearbox. Torque steer, in the lower gears at least, is a perennial reminder of the 184lb/ft of torque that is on tap.
The suspension, however, is anything but standard being upgraded courtesy of bespoke Eibach springs and dampers, a change that firms the handling up in a very satisfactory way. The Astra VXR’s body kit lends the limited edition Astra 888 a bit more visual drama, as do the rather lovely 17-inch OZ Racing alloy wheels.
The 0-62mph time is around 7.5 seconds and the top speed is some way north of 135mph, with handling and braking to match. See what we meant when we said this is probably the best Vauxhall you’ve never heard of?
