Overview

The vendor, a Stag enthusiast, bought the car five years ago as a project car with known faults. He has spent the past half-decade addressing those faults by way of an ongoing running restoration, primarily to the bodywork and underside.

Now predominately complete and passing MOT's regularly, it’s time for the car to go to a new owner to enjoy. There are a few issues with the car to bring it back to show standard, but nothing serious and we all love tinkering with our new cars, don’t we?

Exterior

As might be expected of a British car from the seventies, the Stag has suffered from its share of the dreaded tinworm. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the owner has taken the time and trouble (and no little expense) to get it sorted. Recently this has included new door skins and floor panels rather than ad hoc patches, followed by a respray.

The result looks good and the owner states that MOT failure is now behind him. As always we would encourage potential bidders to examine the car for themselves to enable them to accurately gauge the final quality. As can be seen from the invoices, a plethora of spares have been bought and fitted post-respray. The results are in the owner-supplied photos and more can be requested directly.

Interior

The interior is original and is in remarkably good condition for its age, with only the leather of the steering wheel, a couple of veneered surfaces, and a few of the black-painted instrument bezels letting it down. The driver's seat is said to be fully usable but could do with some restoration - the owner has left it because it would be shame to replace parts when everything else is original - it will be up to the new owner on this one!

The fabric roof is almost new and is in good weatherproof condition with no rips, tears or holes.

Mechanical

This rare example is offered with a manual gearbox rather than the more usual automatic. Sure, it’s not the sweetest shifting gearbox you’ll ever use but it does add yet another dimension to the Stag’s inherently sporting nature and a new clutch was fitted around a thousand miles ago.

The owner tells us that the rest of the mechanical components are in fine fettle and there are no outstanding issues or faults.

However, the underbonnet area isn’t quite as clean as the exterior, and a fastidious owner might want to invest a small amount of time and money to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the car.

History

The car comes with a history folder, comprising a number of old invoices and bills, as well as an owners’ handbook.

Within the Records section you will find numerous photos of the Stag plus many of the invoices on file. Whilst the information is there, we have found it a little difficult to decipher some of the invoices and their chronology relative to the MOT history so have asked the owner for a summary. In his own succinct words:

"The nearside windscreen wiper was done back in 2014 (MOT dated 26/03/14) along with all the corrosion picked up at the same time at a cost of £584.00

All issues of corrosion as per mot 2015 were also rectified along with other issues at a cost of £963.00.

Back in 2016 the MOT failed the repair that was done 12 months previously. A full repair was carried out under warranty along with some further corrosion treatment. Repairs were also carried out to the wheel bearings and brake hose pipes at a cost of £348.00.

In 2017 we had the bodywork all treated with new door panels and a full respray. The under side of the car was checked for any further corrosion, then taken for mot the car passed with no advisory issues.  The car then received waxoyl treatment. The cost of the last repairs and respray was £2750.00.

Over the last three years the car has had over £4500 spent on it.

I would like to think after spending all that money the car is now corrosion free and  I would say the last mot would go towards confirming this."

We couldn't have put it better. Of course, questions and viewings are always strongly recommended

Summary

The Triumph Stag is on many petrolhead’s Bucket List, and with good reason; the soundtrack is unrivalled in its class and there’s enough room for the driver and three mates (or the children, remember some people have families too) to enjoy it together. The spares situation is very healthy making them cheap and easy to run and there’s always a ready market for good cars, which can make them a sound financial investment too.

With a guide price of £13,000 this example offers good value for money and is priced with an eye to the work that still needs doing. The hard work has been done and all it needs is a new owner who is prepared to continue to love and cherish it. And remember our reserve is lower than the estimate...
