During its 26-year production life the original Range Rover’s image went through metamorphosis from big and basic 4x4 lugger, to that of a luxury ‘Chelsea tractor’. Image was king, and the how the high, mighty and horsey snapped them up. Of course it certainly helped that, as well as the prestige element, it also had the minerals to off-road like no other.

The second generation P38a Range Rover broke cover in 1994 and had a hell of a lot to live up to. In came smoother and sleeker lines, air suspension (as per the later generation) and a whole ‘nother world of electronic trickery.

Whether rattling through muddy puddles in the countryside, climbing a mountainside or parking up outside The Dorchester, it always provided the optimum combination of luxury, comfort and space. Power came via the ubiquitous Rover V8, with the option of a 2.5-litre six-cylinder BMW diesel lump.

As time passed and the P38a fell down the food chain, it gained a somewhat unfair reputation as a troublesome charge. The reality though was that many fell into the hands of those that couldn’t afford to run ‘em. That’s why finding a good one is absolutely key and, with a full service history and an enthusiast immediate previous owner, that’s exactly what we have here.

Overview

This example is a last-of-the-line run-out model, produced just before the third generation model landed, and fully loaded with one or two extras (more on that later) therefore a touch more desirable for that. The included V5 document (see photo gallery) shows that it’s had seven former keepers (eight in total).

‘The engine has just had a complete top end rebuild with a new camshaft, followers and full gasket set – all genuine parts,’ explains vendor Ben Thomas, of Lancashire Sports and Performance Ltd. ‘Other than that we’ve not needed to do much to it; just refresh the plastics and bumpers, refurbish the alloys wheels and give it a major service.’

That took place less than 50 miles ago (in preparation for this auction), so it’s good to go, and it’ll also be sold with a full 12 months MOT. ‘It was previously owned by a member of the Range Rover Register, and well looked after.’

As such it comes with a fully stamped service book, with the first five having been completed by main dealers and the remainder at various independent 4x4 specialists.

This Range Rover Vogue SE is located at the vendor’s premises in Littleborough, so as with all our lots we recommend hitting the ‘contact seller’ button to arrange a viewing and test drive.

Exterior

‘Realistically, and not with rose-tinted spectacles on, I’d say the exterior is a very good seven and a half out of ten,’ says Ben. The paint is still nice and presentable; there’s the odd mark here and there, as befits a car of this age and mileage, and a touch of light orange peel around the number plate on the rear tailgate.

Door fit is uniform and all swage lines on those big flanks still line up, as they should. The bumpers have been refurbished and remain in unmarked condition. All light lenses are clear, with no fading or cracks present.

The 18” six-spoke Comet alloy wheels have similarly been refurbished and are very good, with a matching set of Riken SUV Snow 255/55 R18 tyres fitted. All mud flaps remain in situ and model/marque badges are still smart. Overall, it looks to be in very decent nick.

Interior

This is where this particular car scores very highly. Ignore the mileage, because each owner has treated this example with respect. There’s very little wear and where there was (the headlining) it’s been replaced – although the grab handles could do with a clean.

Ben puts it at an eight and a half, and we’re inclined to agree. The Light Stone leather seats (piped blue) have a pleasing patina, although those in the rear have obviously seen less traffic than the front ones.

This model comes with funky Blue Maple wood trim; it could be construed to be an acquired taste, but we love it. There’s also an up-rated Harmon Kardon stereo system, which functions perfectly.

Loaded top-to-tail with toys (electrically adjustable front seats, climate control, cruise control, electric sunroof and door mirrors, alarm, immobiliser, later CARiN Sat Nav system, power-assisted steering and traction control to name but a few) Ben says that they’re all still working.

At the rear the boot carpet remains in nice condition, as do the parcel shelf and carpeted side panels. With a huge load capacity, and a capacity to swallow multiple Homo Sapiens, like all Range Rovers it’s a veritable Tardis inside.

Mechanical

As our pictures in the photo gallery show it also appears to have a particularly solid underbody. We’ve seen far younger models with a whole lot more surface rust and general road grime than the minimal amount to be found here. The exhaust system looks sound, with new-looking rear silencer boxes fitted.

Under the bonnet you can see that the engine hasn’t been detailed, Ben says that this is because they’re quite sensitive to water. That next owner could take their time doing that at their leisure – a toothbrush, a couple of rags and a bit of elbow grease would bring it up nicely in no time at all.

‘We do a lot of P38s and this one is very nice to drive,’ says Ben. ‘There are no suspension knocks or bangs, and the engine is very healthy and strong; gearboxes are pretty bulletproof and this example’s all functions perfectly, both in high and low ratio. There are no gripes or issues.’

History

As well as the V5 document this Range Rover comes with its original Land Rover wallet containing the service portfolio, as well as the owner’s, in-car entertainment and CARiN II navigation system handbooks.

As stated earlier the service history contained within the portfolio is pretty comprehensive, and there are a total of 10 stamps within (notwithstanding its recent major service). Don’t you wish all old Rangie’s had a book like that?

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos of this and other paperwork to support our claim that this car has been maintained to the very highest standard.

Summary

First generation Range Rovers have those ‘classic’ looks (and that very same moniker) and are now becoming thoroughly sought after big boys. The P38a is still considered an extremely cheap way into the luxo 4x4 world and can be had for some very low sticker prices, but be bloody sure you go for a good one.

Visually this model is starting to mellow in a modern classic manner; it’s not quite fully there yet, but as the attrition rate rises it won’t be too long. As a run-out model this Range Rover Vogue SE is a fairly rare beast with approximately 200 constructed, and around 30 in this particular colour combo.

It benefits from still presenting strongly on the outside, very well in the cabin and also from that recent top-end engine rebuild. The mileage isn’t O.T.T. but then neither will you be afraid to use, and add to, it. If you’ve designs on lording it around your manner in exalted style, but want to do it on a fairly tight budget then you this may well be your luxury steed.

It’ll also come with a fresh MOT ticket, which makes our £5000-to-£7000 estimate seem like one helluva a lot of car for the money. No Reserve of course, so on sale from the first bid.

Viewing is always encouraged, and as stated this car is located at the vendor’s Littleborough premises; to arrange an appointment please use the ‘Contact Seller’ button at the top of the listing. Feel free to ask any questions or make observations in the comments section below, or try our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’.

If needed, please remember we have a network of trusted suppliers we work with regularly and can recommend: Classic & Sportscar Finance for purchase-financing, Thames Valley Car Storage for storing your car, AnyVan for transporting it, and Footman James for classic car insurance.

BORING, but IMPORTANT: Please note that whilst we at The Market always aim to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available, we cannot claim they are perfect analyses of any of the vehicles for sale. We offer far greater opportunity for bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding than traditional auctions, and we never stop encouraging bidders to take advantage of this. We do take a good look at the vehicles delivered to our premises for sale, but this only results in our unbiased personal observations, not those of a qualified inspector or other professional, or the result of a long test drive.

Additionally, please note that most of the videos on our site have been recorded using simple cameras which often result in 'average' sound quality; in particular, engines and exhausts notes can sound a little different to how they are in reality.
