The Range Rover Classic is one of the Top Three Most Influential Cars of the 20th Century; the initial concept of a high-performance car that was as capable on the road as off it was so right – and so far ahead of its time - that it has spawned every upmarket SUV and crossover designed ever since.

During its 26-year production life the original Range Rover’s image went through metamorphosis from big and basic 4x4 lugger, to that of a luxury ‘Chelsea tractor’. Image was king, and how the high, mighty and horsey snapped them up. Of course, it certainly helped that, as well as the prestige element, it also had the minerals to off-road like no other.

The basic recipe is simple: a steel frame and a stiff, steel ladder chassis support aluminium body panels that are as functional and beautiful as they are resistant to rust. The fleet-of-foot could opt for a V8 petrol engine of either 3.5, 3.9 or 4.2 litres, while the frugal could opt for an oil-burner.

The rest was straightforward, albeit highly effective: a manual or an automatic gearbox feeds a permanent four-wheel-drive chassis that can be locked in the middle. Soft, long-travel suspension gave immense axle articulation, which all but eliminates the need for differential locks in the axles. Performance, both on-road and off, is stately and almost unstoppable making it the chariot of choice for the police, special forces, the well-heeled, and the discerning for more than two decades.

Overview

‘It’s only done 27,000 miles,’ notes its present keeper, Mick. He points out that his prestige “truck” has essentially had only three owners; the first two keeping it a year apiece and the third hanging onto it from 1997.

‘He was an old boy who only did 1000 miles a year in it,’ he explains. ‘It was his pride and joy and he just loved having it and ensured it lived a pampered life during his tenure, and having always been dry-stored.

Since he passed away in 2017, the Range Rover has once again largely been in storage with minimal use to keep everything working. Even so, Mick, a serial Land Rover owner, has been a little seduced by it; ‘it has a gorgeous engine sound (it’s the V8, of course) and it’s such a clean, original example. With its power, it’s a great drive. And the air suspension works perfectly.’

It’s also mentioning at his point that the Mick has chosen to be very realistic with his reserve.

Exterior

As well as great respect and a little awe, classic (or any) Range Rovers can generate not a little trepidation; what might have come loose, fallen off or rotted. The good news about this one is that everything looks to be very much intact. And luckily, or otherwise, Land Rover’s square-jawed truck has a lot of very straight lines and gaps, so, to some extent, you can quickly see how the vehicle has fared over time. Reassuringly, on this one, those lines are all very consistent panel to panel and side to side, and the gaps between likewise (allowing for a couple of slightly agricultural ‘tolerances’ in the design). There are one or two very small knocks, though hardly visible.

The Roman Bronze paintwork could be another sensitive area, easily showing up areas of any sort of corrosion or fading; but here again this example comes through with flying - or more to the point - very consistent colours. The paintwork is excellent. You might be able to see a very, very (add another very) small blister by one of the seams in the roof rain channel (over the windscreen). And, if you stand and look long enough, there is perhaps a ripple in the panel (left side) where the scuttle curves over into the wing in front of the windscreen, but it’s hard not to overemphasise just how good the overall appearance of the Ranger is.

Coupled to that, all outward appendages - mirrors, bumpers, side repeaters et al, are all present, correct and very firmly fixed in place. What’s more, the black plastic and vinyl sections all retain a good colour and show no cracks. Nor is that (comparatively delicate) plastic front apron damaged - so probably no rock crawling or mud wading gone on here. Try finding another you can say that about……

There is a small dent in the off-side rear vinyl panel, but Mick reassures that these sections unscrew and can probably be easily pushed out.

Also, very reassuringly, the rear hatch - very much a Range Rover danger zone - is in great condition - glass hatch, steel tail gate, hinges, bolts, all of it; fine. Phew!

So, first wear and tear test passed.

The cherished number M4 GEH, currently worn by this Rangie, is included in the sale of the car .

Interior

By the time this example left the factory, the Range Rover’s interior had lost any vestige of utilitarianism. To retain its luxury mien, like the outside, everything needs to be intact. Thankfully it is and again the vehicle presents very well. The carpets are clean and not frayed and the seats are in especially good condition. The Biscuit-coloured leather retains all of its colour, and the hide - even for a 27,000-miler - is in excellent condition. There is no chafing to seat cushion edges - not even on the driver’s seat - and no creases to speak of. Even the edges of the arm rests remain unscathed.

The steering wheel still looks new, while the array of buttons and dials on the dash retain all of their markings. That grey colour plastic that Jaguar Land Rover used doesn’t always age too well (especially for smoking owners), but there are no scratches or discolourations. And everything tested works, just as it should....

Similarly, the lighter coloured plastic around the steering column shroud and in the door cards is in great condition . Look too at the fabric inserts - no stains or warping. Also, if you follow the metal underneath and around the doors, you will see no rust, nor cracking in the seams. Rubber seals are very good, as are the plastic covers to the sills. The headlining is clean and, unlike many a Jag, does not sag. Everything looks and feels tight and fresh.

Like the outside, everything about the interior suggests light use and a respect for and pride in the vehicle as a whole. There’s even still the vaguest trace of new Nineties Range Rover smell.

Mechanical

Inspecting the underside of any 4x4 is usually driven by one main question; to what extent might it have been off road. With this one I’d be inclined to say either not often, but probably never. There are no signs of damage - chassis rails are straight, cross members and out riggers intact. There is surface corrosion on such components, but everything looks strong and functional. Many of the suspension parts have a good coating of weatherproofing paint and most struts/joints/ball ends/bushes look pretty servicable.

The front diff looks similarly coated, but the rear one does show some light surface corrosion, still, the assembly looks robust. Oh, and the exhaust is only a week old!!

The signature three-spoke wheels are remarkably well-preserved - no major scuff, and certainly no cracks or corrosion.

The fairly crowded engine bay is pretty tidy. There are no stains, signs of leaking or overheating. The under-bonnet heat/soundproofing is in great condition. There is no accumulated crud in corners and crannies, nor surface rust on ancillaries. Nor is there any evidence of rust in the seams in the steel panels in front of the engine, but then you probably guessed all that???....

Fluids are good and, like the exhaust, the battery is brand new. (Mick attests to how readily the Range Rover started up after coming out of storage).

Again, though in this case, the overall impression is that here is a vehicle that has led a ‘low impact’ and probably totally ‘on-road’ life.

History

Whilst there is not a huge history with this Rangie - it has only 27,000 miles after all, you will find seven stamps in the service book, the last of which at 26,880 miles back in 2014, confirming how sparingly the car has been used in recent times. The new owner may wish to budget for the cost of a full service when bidding.

An MOT check reveals the last one was carried out July 2017, but Mick had the car tested last week, which has revealed a few minor jobs being required. These are all being completed as this goes “Live”, including the advisory items. Consequently, this glorious Range Rover will come with a clean bill of health, so new owner should have nothing to concern themselves about for the next 12 months and can simply revel in the delight of owning an exceptional, original, very low mileage Classic Range Rover.

In this time of restricted travel, we cannot encourage arranging an inspection in person to see the car’s condition for yourself, but certainly take some time to study the detailed photos in the gallery and why not use the ‘Contact Seller’ option above to arrange a video call with the vendor to look a little closer at the key features and general condition.

Summary

Good condition original Range Rovers are not easy to come by - as said before - so many went on to be workhorses. But this one side-stepped all that to remain a fine and very original example. 

The history speaks for itself, it’s always so re-assuring to have a trail to back up a claim, and this is so transparently a well cared-for, unmolested example. The best of these - in the best of markets - can go for between £60k to £70,000 (and they are disproportionately expensive creatures to restore). This rare example can surely command between £16,000 and £22,000, and with the reserve set even lower, we think represents a wonderful opportunity.
