Background

The boys from Stuttgart already had prior reputation for engineering the blimmin’ bejesus out of its automobiles, but the 1978 Porsche 928 took that to a whole new level. Lauded as a design masterpiece at launch, it swiftly took the European Car of the Year title and with it a multitude of plaudits.

Porsche knew that its all-new range-topping supercar was so far ahead of the competition that it advertised it with the slogan ‘nothing will come close for the next 10 years’. In truth, it was probably even longer than that.

There was however, one little problem. For those brought up on an air-cooled, rear-engined diet of fours and sixes (first in the 356 and then 911), its front-engined water-cooled V8 combo proved to be witchcraft of the unforgivable sort. Throw in its strictly grand touring personality and it was anathema to the company’s legion of sports car fans.

That was then, and this is now. Having fallen on hard decades, the 928’s dander has firmly been on the up for a while now. Those in the know, no longer judge it as a 911 replacement and instead appreciate it for the beauty of its engineering, sheer visual presence and colossal high-speed mile-devouring ability.

With a production run of almost 17 years there’s plenty to choose from whether that’s a 240bhp 4.5-litre Pasha interior endowed original, a 4.7-litre 310bhp S2 or 320bhp 5.0-litre DOHC S4.

Of course, there are multiple other iterations, choices of gearbox (80 per cent were autos) and special editions, but as a taster menu it’s enough.

Overview

This non-sunroof 928 is a collectable late 1986 model (known as the 1986.5) of which less than 1000 were produced. “It comes with the added benefit of sports suspension, dampers and springs,” explains vendor Tim. “It also has a limited-slip differential and bigger front brake callipers. All of which were then added to 928S4 in 1987.”

It’s presented in its original colour of Guards Red with a black piped red leather interior – it doesn’t get more Eighties than that. Where’s Gordon Gecko, when you need him? Our chap has owned the car for two years and carried out a number of improvement works on the car (more on that later).

“The car is very low mileage and ownership, with just four prior owners in 35 years. It also has an almost all Porsche service history, which shows that it’s been serviced every 3k to 5k miles since new. It’s also always been garaged or kept under a car cover.”

With his eyes now on a new project it’s time for this lovely 928 to find a new home.

Exterior

The body appears nice and straight. The paint is very good and not at all faded by the sun (that can also be applied to the black exterior components, including the front and rear spoilers), which is testament to the care that the car has been afforded by its various owners.

Tim had the car Stage 1 machine polished and ceramic coated several months ago and the results of that are still clear in both our video and the Photo Gallery below, as it positively gleams.

Generally it’s a very positive exterior picture but there are a few things worth noting; there are several minor patches of bubbling (such as a small area on the nearside upper tailgate where it meet the roof panel and on the lower edge of the offside door) and a bit of cracking on the front edge of the nearside sill. There are also one or two perished rubbers that could do with replacement. The front spoiler has also taken a knock or two and the extremities have been re-attached, relatively neatly, using cable ties (two on the o/s and one on the n/s).

The seven-slot alloy wheels are fairly clean and all wear relatively new 225 50ZR16 tyres – a pair of Falken FK452s at the front with Good Year Eagle GTs to the rear.

Interior

Tim describes the leather as being very good and supple. There’d be no harm in the next owner giving it a feed, though. The outside driver’s seat bolster has a touch of wear but it’s very minor. Door shuts are super clean.

The centre-column mounted digital clock’s crystal display has seen better days, while the carpets are a touch faded but not worn. It’s definitely smart for it’s age in here. The vendor says he has the Blaupunkt Montreal head unit available as well with the original code, if preferred by the winning bidder.

New speakers and a new head unit for auxiliary-in phone music have been fitted. All electrics work including seats, mirrors, cruise control, windows, central locking and, for that supremely in-period dash of flashiness, so too do the all-important pop-up headlights.

“The air conditioning functions perfectly; it had a new pump fitted and blows ice cold. And it comes with a full tool kit, the space saver spare wheel and the rear luggage cover all intact and in good condition.”

Pop the carpets in the foot-wells and in the boot and you find nice, clean and corrosion-free metal.

Mechanical

“It’s mechanically excellent,” says Tim. “The heads were skimmed and cylinders all recently cleaned, with a new piston ring set fitted at great expense. I also sourced and fitted a stainless steel X-pipe exhaust, it adds a V8 rumble at tick-over but is not at all loud on motorways.”

The engine breathes through Pipercross lifetime sports air filters and he reckons that all in all, output is probably around 325bhp rather than the stock 310bhp.

“The handling is very good and nimble for a wide, long-nosed car – that’s due to 50/50 weight distribution. The 928 was the only sports car to ever win the Car of the Year award when it won in 1977.”

With a new cam belt, and all drive belts, recently fitted it’s in tip-top shape for the next owner. It’s also had a battery cut off and new battery added. The underside has been wire brushed, “there was virtually no rust”, and Waxoyled for peace of mind.

“It also has no MoT advisories now as the rear CV gaiters and wheel bearings have just been done,” concludes Tim. That MoT runs until 10/08/21.

History

You’ll find a raft of expired MoT certificates in the car’s history file, as well as a fairly well stamped (both by Porsche OPCs and independent specialists) original service book.

Recent invoices show recent outlay: of a whopping £9,872.65 at St Thomas Auto Repairs, London on Aug 19, 2020 for the comprehensive engine works that also included a new big end bearing set, con rod bearings set and head gasket set, as well as the other engine works, exhaust additions, air con work and under seal treatment already mentioned by Tim; £1430.33 on Sept 18, 2020 also at St Thomas Auto Repairs, London for rear left inner and outer CV gaiter replacement, seat electric motor rectification work and a comprehensive service (including gearbox oil and filter replacement, power steering flush and power steering fluid).

You’ll also find a number of other invoices dating from around the turn of the millennium, which show works carried out by the owner/s at the time.

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos of the paperwork to support our claim that this car has been maintained to a very good standard.

Summary

There’s no doubt that this is a nice example of a relatively rare 928 variant. Aesthetically it’s not absolutely perfect, but it is smart and well preserved. That said, the next owner could build upon Tim’s recent works and continue to improve the car.

Where it scores very highly is in its mechanical “sorted-ness”. I just made up a word, but forgive me that and you have a 928 that’s ready to be driven. It’s had major, recent and significant financial outlay to ensure that’s the case.

All the electrics function, which is no mean feat on a 928; buyers of lesser examples can quite easily find themselves running through electrical gremlins and many ££££s trying to rectify such issues.

We think this 928 S2 will sell for somewhere between £13,000 and £17,000. For that the next owner will get a genuinely strong example with a good service history, that’s ready for some serious high-speed action.

Wearing red braces whilst partaking in that is entirely optional.
