Background

The boys from Stuttgart already had prior reputation for engineering the blimmin’ bejesus out of its automobiles, but the 1978 Porsche 928 took that to a whole new level. Lauded as a design masterpiece at launch, it swiftly took the European Car of the Year title and with it a multitude of plaudits.

Porsche knew that its all-new range-topping supercar was so far ahead of the competition that it advertised it with the slogan ‘nothing will come close for the next 10 years’. In truth, it was probably even longer than that.

There was however, one little problem. For those brought up on an air-cooled, rear-engined diet of fours and sixes (first in the 356 and then 911), its front-engined water-cooled V8 combo proved to be witchcraft of the unforgivable sort. Throw in its strictly grand touring personality and it was anathema to the company’s legion of sports car fans.

That was then, and this is now. Having fallen on hard decades, the 928’s dander has firmly been on the up for a while now. Those in the know, no longer judge it as a 911 replacement and instead appreciate it for the beauty of its engineering, sheer visual presence and colossal high-speed mile-devouring ability.

With a production run of almost 17 years there’s plenty to choose from, whether that’s a 240bhp 4.5-litre Pasha interior endowed original, a 4.7-litre 300bhp S or last-of-the-line 345bhp 5.4-litre DOHC GTS. Of course, there are multiple other iterations, choices of gearbox (80 per cent were autos) and special editions, but as a taster menu it’s enough.

Suffice to say, for many the very last of the breed is best. More speed, more power, bigger brakes, more engineering goodness, more toys, and better-integrated visuals – oh, I’ll have GTS please. And that’s exactly what we have here…

Overview

The V5 document shows that this 928 GTS has had 7 owners in total, while its fully stamped service book and history file (see both Photo Gallery and History Highlights, below) show that it’s been thoroughly well looked after since new.

‘That extensive service history was the main reason I bought the car,’ confirms vendor Toni. ‘I’d always wanted one and after searching hard for a top example, I found this one at the Ripley Carriage Company in Surrey.’

That was in November 2016 and since then he’s used the big land shark for pleasure – enjoying weekend blasts and attending the odd Porsche meet.

‘I’ve spent a fair amount over the last three years, so it’s been maintained to a high standard. The garage that looks after it for me raves about it, saying it’s one of the best 928s they work on.'

According to Toni it’s a reluctant sale and one that’s ‘head over heart’. Residing in South West London, he’s just bought an electric car for commuting in and doesn’t feel it’s now getting used as much as it should.

‘It’d be good if it goes to someone who’ll use it, rather than treat it as a garage queen,’ he says. ‘It’s in excellent condition. Paintwork is sharp, interior leather is lovely and mechanically it’s sorted. It drives lovely, pulling beautifully and is a proper GT car – you wouldn’t know it’s as old as it is. I could continue waxing lyrical about it.’

As a show of good faith for the next owner, he’s just had the cambelt changed. ‘I’ve been stung in the past with cars that are ‘sorted and ready to go’, but this is really is ready to go and on the money. I never bought it as an investment and it’s good value for someone.’

The odometer currently reads 116,385 miles.

Exterior

For a car that’s been driven this 928 still looks stunning. There’re precious few flaws in the bodywork, with no signs of any corrosion. Panel fit virtually as it did when it left the factory, which means first class. The original paint retains a deep and satisfying lustre with very little in the way of polishing swirl marks.

There are a few stone chips on the schnozz, but these are of the micro variety. The body-coloured rear spoiler and both bumpers are in very good condition, and there are no chips or scrapes around the door keyholes.

There’s a touch of pitting on two sections of the nearside satin black window trim, but only discernible under a close eye. All plastics including the central Porsche-monogrammed bar at the rear remain crack free, with no signs of fading.

The alloy wheels are generally very good but, with the exception of the offside rear, each has a minor scuff or two. Nothing that detracts from the overall visual package, but the next owner may want to tidy them up. The Bridgestone S-02 tyres look fairly fresh and still have plenty of life left in them.

There’s room for a bit of tidying here and there; the rear tailpipes could do with a deep clean and there’s a bit of grime around the fuel cap. Otherwise it’s a superb looking beast.

Interior

It’s lovely in here – a sea of nicely aged leather and limited wear and tear. The carpets are still in good nick and covered with darker grey over-mats. The leather on the gearstick is a touch worn, but we’re sure it could be easily brought back up to standard. The leather-bound steering wheel has to be on of the nicest we've come across - just the right size and girth, through which you can feel the beautifully weighted steering, knowing exactly what the front wheels are doing.

All (yes, all!) electrics work, including the driver’s seat, sunroof, windows, and mirrors. That’s no small matter on these hugely complicated cars, as these can give all manner of issues on a less well-maintained example.

Over the years I’ve sat in many a 928 – especially sunroof endowed examples – that have a faint or strong smell of damp; no such worries here, as it appears bone dry and without odour.

The space saver spare wheel and a full tool set are present in the boot, as is the luggage cover. The metal floor there is nice and solid, with no issues at all.

Mechanical

On the road this 928 GTS is a brute; performance is thumping. The engine feels bulletproof and pulls like a train, while the auto’ box shifts cleanly. The huge brakes remain superlative, pulling the car up straight and true, while the suspension carries out its duties without issue. Very impressive and we’d feel confident attacking any big journey in this example.

Underneath there’s very little surface corrosion (especially true for a car that’s been used), which suggests it’s only been driven in the better weather, and the suspension components all look to be in rude health.

Under the bonnet it’s a similar story, although a touch dusty. Toni says he’s enjoyed driving this car and that’s clear – no concours toothbrush cleaning here. That said it could be cleaned very easily and replacing one or two slightly rusty screws, brackets and bolts would further lift it.

History

Toni was being modest when he said that he’d had the cambelt changed prior to sale, because that’s not all that he’s had done. An invoice from independent Porsche specialist GT One Ltd – dated July 7, 2019 – shows that in addition a new radiator, water pump and tensioning roller were fitted. The washer pump was also replaced and jets cleaned, a fuel leak repaired, coolant sensor replaced and surface brake line corrosion dealt with. The cost of all this work was the princely sum of £3334.

Flicking through the rest of the file there are a number of other invoices from GT One Ltd showing the work carried out – and significant fiscal outlay – during Toni’s ownership. One thing’s for sure, there’s been no scrimping.

The rest of the file confirms that’s been the case throughout this 928’s life; there are a huge number of invoices from a variety of independent and main dealer Porsche specialists – in total around £50k has been spent on this car in its lifetime.

There’s also a large number of previous MOT test certificates, as well as the V5 document, two keys, owners maintenance handbook and a fully and comprehensively stamped service book. We think you’d struggle to find a 928 with a better service history.

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos of this and other paperwork to support our claim that this car has been maintained to the very highest standard.

Summary

With the advent of time the vast majority of 928s fell into the ‘just an old Porker’ category. As such many ended up in hands that couldn’t afford to run them properly, and most importantly scraped and scrimped on their maintenance.

This is not one of them! Instead, this has been used, serviced and enjoyed as the consummate supercar GT that it is. That’s reflected in the car’s comprehensive service history, condition as presented and in the superb manner in which it drives.

Factor in a conscientious owner – he could no doubt have sold it as was, without embarking on work for the driving pleasure of the next one – and that makes this a very desirable example to own. He estimates spending in the region of £17k on the car himself.

Our guide price for the GTS is £29,000 to £36,000, and for that the next owner will be getting exactly what its current owner says, an example that’s ‘ready to go and on the money’. Happy bidding.

BORING, but IMPORTANT: Please note that whilst we at The Market always aim to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available, we cannot claim they are perfect analyses of any of the vehicles for sale. We offer far greater opportunity for bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding than traditional auctions, and we never stop encouraging bidders to take advantage of this. We do take a good look at the vehicles delivered to our premises for sale, but this only results in our unbiased personal observations, not those of a qualified inspector or other professional, or the result of a long test drive.

Additionally, please note that most of the videos on our site have been recorded using simple cameras which often result in 'average' sound quality; in particular, engines and exhausts notes can sound a little different to how they are in reality.
