The boys from Stuttgart already had prior reputation for engineering the blimmin’ bejesus out of its automobiles, but the 1978 Porsche 928 took that to a whole new level. Lauded as a design masterpiece at launch, it swiftly took the European Car of the Year title and with it a multitude of plaudits.

Porsche knew that its all-new range-topping supercar was so far ahead of the competition that it advertised it with the slogan ‘nothing will come close for the next 10 years’. In truth, it was probably even longer than that.

There was however, one little problem. For those brought up on an air-cooled, rear-engined diet of fours and sixes (first in the 356 and then 911), its front-engined water-cooled V8 combo proved to be witchcraft of the unforgivable sort. Throw in its strictly grand touring personality and it was anathema to the company’s legion of sports car fans.

That was then, and this is now. Having fallen on hard decades, the 928’s dander has firmly been on the up for a while now. Those in the know, no longer judge it as a 911 replacement and instead appreciate it for the beauty of its engineering, sheer visual presence and colossal high-speed mile-devouring ability.

With a production run of almost 17 years there’s plenty to choose from, whether that’s a 240bhp 4.5-litre Pasha interior endowed original, a 4.7-litre 300bhp S or last-of-the-line 345bhp 5.4-litre DOHC GTS. Of course, there are multiple other iterations, choices of gearbox (80 per cent were autos) and special editions, but as a taster menu it’s enough.

Suffice to say, for many the very last of the breed is best. More speed, more power, bigger brakes, more engineering goodness, more toys, and better-integrated visuals – oh, I’ll have GTS please. And that’s exactly what we have here…

Overview

Built during the last year of manufacture of the 928, this is a fully spec’d top of the range GTS built in September 1994. The seller has owned this lovely Porsche 928 GTS since January 5 2017. It’s his second GTS - he says “I had a Grey example with Sports seats, but given my Rubinesque proportions, I needed a GTS with the wider Comfort seats with all the electronic adjustments.” You just know that someone is seriously dedicated to a model when they sell one and buy a newer example, all in the name of comfort. The seller says “The 928 was a childhood dream; when I first saw one as a schoolboy I couldn’t understand why the lights were facing the sky” starting a very long desire to own one, a desire he fulfilled more than 30 years later.

That fact makes this sale all the more interesting. This car has been cherished, lavished with care and attention by the seller and it is very likely that the car would have remained cosseted in the collection from which it comes, if it were not for the seller’s difficult decision to thin out his collection; this is his third of several classics being sold through The Market.

The included V5 document shows that the 928 GTS has had a total of 10 owners, while the odometer indicates that it’s covered 104,974 miles in that time. Both factors are for information only, as this car’s biggest selling point is its stunning condition.

It’s been absolutely cosseted. Everything works just as it should; all electrics, air conditioning – the lot. Believe us, that’s no mean feat on a 928.

In the history file you’ll find a range of documents, but the most important is an invoice from Porsche specialist Loe Bank Motors Ltd in Bury; this is a list of comprehensive works that the seller had carried out in mid-2019 totaling in the region of £11K (more on that later).

“I’ve used the car sparingly, mainly for long runs at the weekend to meet ups with fellow members of TIPEC (The Independent Porsche Enthusiasts Club) and the Porsche 928 Owners’ Club,” he says. During his ownership the 928 has lived a very comfortable life in the basement of his apartment block, connected to a CTEK trickle-charger.

If you’re looking for a sorted example of a GTS, then this is it.

Exterior

Aventura Green Pearl isn’t a 928 colour we’ve come across too often, but we must say it’s absolutely lovely and suits the car’s space-age lines to a tee.

Panel fit remains true. The doors, boot and bonnet shut with an accompanying sound that’s pure Porsche quality. There’s no variance in paint hue or tone across surfaces, and the lustre is impressive – thanks in part to the healthy layer of polish it wears. The rear screen still wears the original “AFN” sticker from the original Porsche dealer.

“It’s had a lot of effort, love and attention,” says the seller proudly. Refurbished alloy wheels (which remain spotless), new centre caps and fresh tyres are further proof of his attention to detail. “The only thing I’d change if keeping it would be to replace the replacement windscreen; there’s nothing wrong with it, but it doesn’t have the correct tint that an OE windscreen has.”

Interior

The first this we noticed about the interior is the sheer quality of the Burr Walnut wood trim, which looks immaculate. “When it went up to Chris Sanderson at Loe Bank Motors last year I had him remove all the wood, which I brought back down to Silvercrest Woodwork & Design in Bucks to be re-veneered, lacquered and polished.” The cost of the latter alone was £859.20, but it’s money very well spent as the interior photos (please see Gallery, below) demonstrate. Another indicator of the seller’s attention to detail are the car’s two keys, which have had their heads replaced with brand new Porsche LED light items.

A high-specification Pioneer Stereo system has been fitted, and a Garmin power socket installed on the dashboard for modern devices. “The air conditioning blows cold, and doesn’t leak or need a re-gas,” says the seller. “And everything else functions (seats, sunroof, etc) perfectly.” Those of you regular with a 928 know that the functionality of such things at seat controls are strong indicators of the overall condition of the example you are looking at…

The leather seats have a nice patina; the steering wheel and shift handle are rip free. All carpets and mats are in exemplary condition and underneath is nice corrosion-free metal, while at the rear you’ll find the parcel shelf still in place. Overall, it’s a very well groomed cabin.

Whilst it has been with us, we note that the (original) immobiliser is becoming intermittent and may require a little bit of remedial attention.

Mechanical

“It drives extremely well,” says Oscar. “It’s very comfortable and very quick; in fact, it’s deceptively fast. Press the accelerator a few millimeters and that big, lazy V8 will launch itself. It’s very easy to get into trouble in terms of speed, because you can be below 2500rpm in top gear and yet be doing well over 70mph.”

Having had the 928 at our Abingdon headquarters for a few days now we can confirm that its performance is astonishing. It’s big, brutal and consummate in terms of both ground-covering pace and abilities.

The brakes are precise, the auto’ box shifts smoothly and the V8 is a glorious powerhouse. Suspension is 928 planted with no shonks or clonks elicited. And yes, those electrics all work.

The engine bay is nicely presented with a split air pipe gaiter (cosmetic only) being the only visual detractor. As the photos in our Gallery below show, the underside is also in very good nick.

History

In the history file you’ll find an original 928 Workshop Manual, a Porsche Club Great Britain certificate of authenticity and a number of invoices both from the current seller’s ownership and some of its previous custodians. One dated 5/2/2015 from Bedford-based specialist Porsche Autoumbau shows that the cambelt was replaced (at a cost of £630) at 99,460 miles.

The seller’s purchase invoice is also included as is another one for a return visit a month later, during which he had the alloy wheels refurbished and new Continental Premium Contact 6 tyres fitted all round (@ 101,842 miles, costing £1126.19 in total) amongst other works.

There’s a current MOT certificate, which runs until June 25, 2020, as well as that aforementioned Loe Bank Motors invoice detailing the huge number of tasks it carried out (including new shock absorbers, water pump, radiator fan and a major service to name but a few). Finally, there’s the wood refurbishment invoice and another for fitment of a new battery (the latter in October 2017).

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos of this and other paperwork to support our claim that this car has been maintained to the very highest standard.

Summary

We really feel for the seller, it must be difficult to part with this car. Having spoken to him, it’s clear how much he loves this car, and also that he doesn’t want to sell it. However, the harsh reality of our current world is that it needs a new home.

The good news for the next owner is that they’ll be getting not only the most collectable (special editions, aside) variant of the 928, but one that is unmodified, in extremely fine fettle and ultra usable.

Those that know this model of Porsche are aware that fixing non-functioning electrics can very quickly run to a bill in the multiple thousands of pounds, so buying a cheap unloved example is most often a (very) false economy.

We think this cherished example will sell for in the region of £24,000 to £35,000, with the reserve set well below that. For that, the new owner will be getting one of the last of the line examples (from the final year of manufacture) of the most desirable 928. There aren’t many of these about.

They’ll also be buying one of the most capable grand tourers of its, or in fact any, generation – period.

BORING, but IMPORTANT: Please note that whilst we at The Market always aim to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available, we cannot claim they are perfect analyses of any of the vehicles for sale. We offer far greater opportunity for bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding than traditional auctions, and we never stop encouraging bidders to take advantage of this. We do take a good look at the vehicles delivered to our premises for sale, but this only results in our unbiased personal observations, not those of a qualified inspector or other professional, or the result of a long test drive.

Additionally, please note that most of the videos on our site have been recorded using simple cameras which often result in 'average' sound quality; in particular, engines and exhausts notes can sound a little different to how they are in reality.

Please note that this is sold as seen and that, as is normal for used goods bought at auction, the Sale of Goods Act 1979 does not apply. See our FAQs for more info, and feel free to inspect any vehicle as much as you wish.
