Background

Introduced in 1975, the 924 was Porsche’s first front engine - rear wheel drive car, although the 928 had been designed earlier this was on sale before that. It was also the first Porsche offered with an automatic, but thankfully this car is not spoiled by one.

Developed in conjunction with VW, it was built at an ex-NSU factory in Stuttgart and used a VW derived 4 cylinder, the block taken from the Audi 100 but fitted with a Porsche designed head and when fitted with Bosch K-Jet Tronic injection made 95 bhp. It has been unfairly said it used a VW van engine, in reality the block was shared but little else.

It was the ideal entry level Porsche, its straight line performance was good but no threat to a 911, but with its rear transaxle gearbox had perfect weight distribution for outstanding handling, making it a real drivers car. It was so popular that it even remained on sale alongside its replacement, the 944.

Overview

The Porsche has been with its current owner for a couple of years in which time he has put a lot of work into bringing it to its current excellent condition. It was a solid, rust free car when he bought it, so in his care it has been cosmetically and mechanically improved with new paint and refreshing some parts in the engine bay.

Having been with a capable spanner wielding owner, so everything on the car works and its in lovely condition.

Exterior

The sleek wedge of the 924s body looks fantastic in bright Guards Red, the car was only painted very recently so the panels are straight with no dings or corrosion and the nose is clear of stone chips. The most eighties feature of the car has to be the pop up headlights, which raise and lower as they should, and of course it has fog lamps built in to the front bumper next to the indicators. At the back there is a glass clam shell tailgate with rubber spoiler, both looking good, and the Porsche and 924 decals were replaced after painting and look factory original, and the black rubber bumper insert is in good condition.

The 14” alloy wheels are all unmarked and have recent tyres fitted so have deep tread all round.

Interior

A good colour contrast to the bright red exterior, the interior is a mix of tan fabrics and brown plastics. The seats are tight hugging bucket half leather types with Porsche script in the fabric and integrated headrests, with almost no wear on the bolsters.

The carpets and door cards are in great condition, with period Alpine speakers in the doors and electric window switches in the plastic door caps, which are not warped or damaged. The dash top is generally very good with just a couple of hairline cracks around the vents, and the instrument cluster has fantastic conical dial glass.

In the centre console we find a trio of gauges for oil, battery and the clock above a Philips radio cassette, so in period it has ‘LCD display’ printed on the front as a feature, and the carpeted tunnel top has a switch for the electric sunroof by the leather gripped manual gearshift.

In the back are a pair of tight bucket seats which have had seatbelts added.

Mechanical

Under the car all appears very good. No rust is visible looking under from beside the car but the owner reports it has been on a ramp for inspection and appears very solid under the car and in the arches.

In the last year or so it has had a fair bit of money spent on the fuel system, it uses Bosch K Jet mechanical injection which is generally very dependable but can be hard to diagnose issues, so had new injectors and fuel pump fitted and then a used warm up regulator which was rebuilt by THE K Jet specialists, KMI, in total a spend of over £1000 which now has the car singing.

It also had all new brakes last year, with new disks, pads and callipers fitted, and passed its MOT in April.

History

This 924 looks to have been very well looked after throughout its life, with a stack of receipts from specialist garages and suppliers going back to when it was new. There is a receipt and 3 year warranty from a bodyshop in 1996 but it doesn’t say what for so it appears its was a very minor scrape as there was no sign of repairs when the paint was stripped recently.

The recent full paint job was done by a professional has been done to an extremely high standard.

Summary

With its classic ‘80s retro styling of sharp, clean lines and details like the pop up headlights combined and the perfect colour combo for a Porsche of this era and with the wider recognition that these really are fantastically well balanced drivers cars, 924 values are shooting up and rightly so.

The condition of this one, both inside and out, and mechanically is fantastic. These are incredibly tough cars and make an ideal every day classic that can be easily enjoyed without cottonwool treatment.
