Background

In 1976 we saw the Porsche 924 arrive. Designed by Dutch designer Haam Lagaay, a member of the Porsche design team, he designed the 2+2 coupe to be practical and agile.

Using a transaxle rear-wheel drive with a VW 2.0 litre engine, the power may have been quite low by Porsche standards but this was to become the perfect entry level Porsche at a time of need. The 924 was a huge success from the off, and in the second year they sold more than 25,000 units.

Once launched, the 924 was developed quickly. Next on the upgrade list was a five-speed gearbox, followed by a three-speed automatic option. It was in 1979 that things got more interesting with the release of the 924 Turbo. Using a KKK turbocharger and a modified cylinder head mated to the revised 2.0 litre bottom end, the power was pushed to 170 bhp getting close to the much more expensive 911 SC.

In 1982, the series 2 924 Turbo was launched, like the one we have here today. The series 2 had a few changes such as a revised turbocharger with a larger compressor running increased boost, and an improved fuel injection system with Digital Ignition Timing Control which pushed the power to 177 bhp.

Overview

The seller of this beautiful 1982 Porsche 924 Turbo series 2 has owned the car for approximately 3 years, and amazingly has hardly used it as you can see from the MOT history. It has covered just 21 miles from 10th July 2018 MOT to the most recent one in April this year. The seller was told about the car by a friend who saw the Porsche for sale, and the seller being a huge fan of 80's, 90's cars thought it was too good of a car to miss out on. Sadly the lack of use and need of space has meant what will be a regrettable sale for the 924.

You may be thinking that it doesn't quite look like the 924 Turbo you remember. That's because in the mid nineties the Porsche was fitted with the GT body kit. The receipt is in with the paperwork at a cost of £3,327.52 plus fitting. There was a full respray and to finish it off, some teledial wheels have been fitted. The owner at the time invested a considerable amount of money into the Turbo which has made the whole car come together very nicely indeed. Matching the outside is the extremely clean Pasha interior trim which is in excellent condition.

Exterior

Finished in the fantastic Lhasa Green metallic, the 924 Turbo stands out from the crowd with the already mentioned GT body kit purchased from Club Autosport Ltd on 24th July 1995. Now, first things first, we must mention how well this kit has been fitted, especially the rear arches on the underside. You would not know they weren’t original as they have been fitted with a factory finish.

Starting at the front of the 924, the bumper is in excellent condition with no noticeable stone chips and the indicators and fog lights are free from any cracks. The vented front panel (standard fit on turbo models), aligns nicely with the bumper and bonnet. The pop up headlights are working just as they should and the lights are free from any cracks. GT’s have the bonnet scoop that normally would go to an intercooler mounted on top of the engine, but the normal turbo doesnt come with an intercooler and so the bonnet has been left uncut. The wider wings are also part of the GT kit, and these align nicely with the bumper and bonnet.

Around to the sides of the 924 and the doors align as they should. The window seals are in a tidy condition and it looks as though the windows were fully removed for the respray (another sign of a good job). As mentioned, the GT arch extensions are an excellent fit that look factory. Quite uncommon is that this car is a non sunroof model. Usually these are sought after for racing with the solid roof giving a little more rigidity.

To the rear of the 924, and again it is like the rest of the car, the bumper aligns nice and straight and the lights are crack free. The tailgate has had the larger boot spoiler fitted from a 944 to compliment the larger width of the GT look.

The standard turbo wheels have been replaced with some Porsche Teledial which are slightly wider and have rear spacers to push them out that little bit further. The tyres are all matching and have plenty of tread left on them.

Interior

Inside, the 924 is trimmed with the (no it's not your eyes playing tricks on you), Pasha trim, which is in excellent condition. There are no real signs that the interior has been retrimmed and we would say it matches the mileage at 48,569, but there is no paperwork to back this up. The online MOT history would suggest that the car had been off the road for a number of years or had very little use.

All the seats in the Porsche are in extremely good condition along with the door cards and carpets, which again don't have any signs of wear on the driver's heel pad. The steering wheel has been changed to a black leather Momo.

The dashboard in 924’s are notoriously bad for cracking, and unfortunately, this like most hasn't escaped. There are a few cracks and it does look like it’s had some repairs at some point. All the switchgear works as it should and the car shows good oil pressure when ticking over. The 924 also has air conditioning. This is not running cold which may just need a regas or could be something else, the seller has never investigated. There is a slot for a radio, which could easily be fitted.

Into the boot and the boot carpet is nice and clean, with the original spare wheel, jack and wheel brace. Under the carpet and looking down into the quarters is all clean and free from corrosion.

Mechanical

The underside of the Porsche had a coating of fresh underseal just before the seller acquired the vehicle, and with such little use since then it still looks very fresh. There are no signs of any leaks coming from either the engine or gearbox.

Back in November 2016 there were some advisories for the MOT regarding brake pipes. These have all been replaced along with new discs and pads to ensure everything is just how it should be.

On the engine side of things, the engine bay is well presented with new soundproofing fitted to the underside of the bonnet. The 2.0 litre turbo fires up nice and clean, there is a slight misfire just for a few seconds. With such little use the seller has not had the car serviced and so it would probably benefit from a full service. That said, when it's warmed up it’s fine and ticks over nice and smoothly with no signs of any smoke, even after idling for a while. There are no untoward noises coming from the engine or the transmission. The seller reports the Dogleg 5-speed gearbox changes nice and smooth and the car pulls well through all the gears.

History

The 924 comes with the original Porsche wallet and owners handbook. History wise is quite thin, there are some receipts for, as mentioned, the GT kit £3,327.52 and more recently discs, pads in January 2017. The Turbo has matching locks all around and even comes with the original emergency spare key for the car.

There are some old MoT certificates with the car and a fresh MoT was carried out on 22nd April 2021. Since 2016, this 1982 Porsche 924 Turbo GT tribute has covered just 33 miles!

Summary

The Porsche 294 has taken quite a bashing over the years in terms of “not being a proper Porsche” or “it's just a Volkswagen”. In reality, when Porsche’s bank balance didn’t look too good, it was the 924 that played a massive part in turning the company's fortunes around.

The first transaxle rear wheel drive front engine Porsche made, giving a 48/52 weight distribution, meant for excellent balance and handling. Then launching the turbo model, the weight distribution changed to 49/51 (pretty near perfect). The turbo model was also the first turbo front engine Porsche which bridged the gap between the 924 and the 911 SC, to which the power figures of the Turbo were very close to.

924, 944, 928, 968, all front engine cars and you only have to look at the prices and how they have risen over the last few years. So the 924 may have taken some stick in the past…..now is just the time to catch it before it's too late. With the first front engine turbo Porsche getting quite thin on the ground, prices are certainly only going to go one way. Another reason? if you’ve not yet tried some 80’s boost…... you need to!

We estimate it will bring in the region of £16,000 - £21,000.
