Background

The third-generation CL (Coupé Leicht/Coupé Light or Coupé Luxusklasse/Coupé Luxury depending on who you ask…) was Mercedes-Benz’s ultimate luxury grand touring car. Built between 2006 and 2013, it was based on the S-Class saloon, albeit with a shorter wheelbase for more nimble handling in line with its more sporting credentials.

Previously known as the SEC and S-Coupé, the CL C216 was available with a range of engines from the poverty-spec 5.5-litre V8 (heh, everything is relative…) through to the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 by way of the normally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 CL63AMG and the ultra-luxury 5.5-litre with twin turbochargers you’re looking at here.

Power outputs varied from 383bhp and 391lb/ft of torque to 604bhp and 738lb/ft of torque - or only 14bhp less power but 259lb/ft more torque than the McLaren F1 road car…

All were limited to a top speed of 155mph and while the fastest could reach 62mph in 4.4 seconds, even the slowest took only a second longer. The CL600 you are looking at here has 510bhp and 612lb/ft of torque, enough to reach 62mph in 4.6 seconds.

Plus, as a 2011-model year car, it features all the goodies that that year’s facelift brought. These include bi-xenon headlights, LED foglights, new wings and bonnet plus different exhaust pipes.

The interior featured different wooden accents plus (depending on final trim level) Adaptive High Beam Assist, Attention Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Night View Assist, Pre-Safe Braking, Active Body Control, Torque Vectoring Braking, Active Body Control, AIRMATIC suspension, ESP Cornering Assist, Active Bonnet, and COMAND sat-nav.

It’s probably fair to say that 2011-onwards CL is so clever that it sports a higher IQ than our entire staff...

Overview

Believed to be one of only four of this spec registered in the UK, our next auction listing is a fully loaded Mercedes-Benz CL600 AMG. First registered at the end of 2010 but a 2011MY car, it features a custom interior and only 62,000 miles with a full service history.

In the care of the vendor for the past 18 months, the previous owner was fastidious, keeping every single invoice - and it has been so well looked after that it still has three months of its First Tier Mercedes-Benz warranty left, which should give the new owner plenty of reassurance for the £71.67 per month it will cost them.

And that’s not the only pleasant financial surprise because despite having a list price of well over £100k when it was new, this one will sell for a tiny fraction of that…

Exterior

The black coachwork is, as you’ve probably already guessed, in a very good condition. Bar the odd stonechip and minor mark it is every bit as good as you’d expect of a car of its value and careful curation.

So, you’ll see that it has ultra-tight shutlines, very good panel alignment, excellent dent-free panels, ripple-free flanks, and a very good shine to the paint. The light lenses are all good, as are the badges and glass. It really is a credit to its current and former owners but then it racked up the majority of its mileage in the first four years, only being wheeled out much less frequently since then.

That said, the 20-inch AMG alloy wheels do show some kerbing and the odd area of lifting lacquer but they’re shod with matching Dunlop tyres, all of which have decent tread.

As we will never tire of explaining, our experience shows that matching high-quality tyres are an infallible sign of a caring and mechanically sympathetic owner who is prepared to spend the appropriate amount in maintaining their car properly. Their presence does not, of course, preclude the need for a thorough inspection - something the vendor would welcome, by the way – but it does perhaps give you an insight into their attitude towards maintenance.

Issues to sort are non-existent. While the rear number plate is starting to delaminate, the car will revert to an age-appropriate number when the owner removes his cherished registration leaving nothing to do bar love it because the only other mark we can see is to the underside of the front valence.

Interior

The special-order Aubergine leather interior presents as more of a dark brown than it does purple, and it looks utterly stunning.

As does the wood-rimmed steering wheel, which is utterly magnificent. At a time when most cars were featuring air-bagged monstrosities, MB has neatly integrated its into one of the nicest modern ’wheels we can recall.

Remnants of yesteryear technology include a mobile phone docking station in the central glovebox, plus a remote control for the factory head unit.

And yet, for all the fun of discovering the CL’s retro features, the CL600 is still very of-the-moment with its heated, cooled, and massage leather seats, and a huge array of passive and active safety technology alongside the sort of ambience that drew important-people-in-a-hurry to them back-in-the-day.

Other highlights include a wonderful fluted headlining, V12 badges wherever you look, and a Harman Kardon stereo system.

Plus, it’s all in great shape and the owner isn’t aware of anything that doesn’t work. It all looks fabulous with only very light creasing to the driver’s seat betraying the car’s past decade of use.

Faults? Well, bar the odd minor mark here and there - and the fact that the boot needs a hoover - there’s nothing at all. It really is a stunning place to be and would be well worth inspecting in person to fully appreciate how good it is.

Mechanical

The CL600’s servicing regimen is impeccable, comprising:

• 16.08.2011 and 10,938 miles – small service by Mercedes-Benz Birmingham

• 04.04.2012 and 23,118 miles – large service Mercedes-Benz Weybridge

• 11.01.2013 and 35,293 miles – small service Mercedes-Benz Weybridge

• 22.01.2014 and 44,950 miles - large service Mercedes-Benz Orpington

• 26.01.2015 and 48,999 miles – small service Mercedes-Benz Weybridge

• 24.02.2016 and 52,383 miles – small service Mercedes-Benz Weybridge

• 24.03.2017 and 50,781 miles – small service Mercedes-Benz Weybridge

• 24.04.2018 and 55,606 miles – large service Mercedes-Benz Weybridge

• 03.05.2019 and 57,932 miles – small service L&L Inc

• 07.09.2019 and 59,136 miles – new battery

• 27.05.2020 and 62,598 miles – large service by L&L Inc

The vendor tells us that it drives as it should and has no faults that he is aware of.

The only issue we can see is a grubby engine bay and given how special that engine is, we can see the new owner might want to get someone in to valet it to display it properly. After all, let’s be honest; when you’ve got a V12 under the bonnet you’re going to show it off, aren’t you?

History

The CL600’s MOT certificate expires in November 2020 and it was granted with no advisories, something it’s done every year bar one – and that one aberration was only for a worn balljoint…

The car comes with a number of expired MOT certificates plus a sheaf of invoices and bills to confirm the work that has been done to it over the years.

It also still has its original owner’s handbook, book pack and wallet plus two keys.

Please visit the documents section of the gallery of this listing where you will find photos of this and other paperwork to support our claim that this car has been maintained to a very good standard.

If you’d like to inspect the car prior to placing a bid – something we would encourage – then please use the Contact Seller button to arrange an appointment.

NB. We know that many of you will be limiting your social exposure over the coming days and weeks, so if you’d rather not come to see the car in person, please contact the owner and ask if they can shoot a personal video of the car honing in on any areas you’d like them to concentrate on.

Summary

A V12 Mercedes-Benz is barely run in at 63,000 miles meaning that this fully serviced one with three months to run on its First Tier warranty makes this a canny buy for the luxury car enthusiast on a budget.

Nor is that fabulous condition and feature-laden cockpit going to add up to a huge entry price because, we think this one will only go for somewhere between £20,000 and £25,000, at which price it offers a staggering amount of car for the money.

It is also, you will recall, the last of the MB V12 cars, the engine many enthusiasts consider the last of the great engines. For that reason alone, a CL600 deserves a place in your garage – that it is in such a well-fettled example of an ultra-rare car merely adds to its already considerable desirability.

Viewing is always encouraged, and this particular car is located with the seller in London; to arrange an appointment please use the Contact Seller button at the top of the listing. Feel free to ask any questions or make observations in the comments section below, or try our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’.

This vehicle is not with us at The Market’s HQ near Abingdon, which means we have had to rely on the owner’s description of it, in conjunction with the photographs you see here, to compile the listing.

With this in mind, we would encourage potential bidders to contact the owner themselves and arrange to view the car in person, or to arrange a dedicated video call in which they can view the car virtually and ask questions.
