Background

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign studio, the Maserati 3200GT is a four-seat grand tourer of the old school – and old school in this case means a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive hotrod with a limited-slip differential at the back and a thumping twin-turbo, 32-valve, dual-overhead-camshaft, 3.2-litre V8 petrol engine under the bonnet. And while that engine might produce ‘only’ 365bhp, it sounds like the devil himself having an orgasm at full chat.

The suspension is double-wishbones, and forged aluminium control arms and uprights all round, plus vented and cross-drilled discs on all four corners, clamped by Brembo four-pot calipers. It has, in other words, all the good stuff.

Launched by none other than Sir Stirling Moss in 1998, the Maserati 3200 GT featured the world’s first LED rear lights. Their boomerang shape makes the car instantly recognisable and they look especially effective when presented on a red car, where they almost disappear.

An automatic version was offered, which is what you are looking at here. Christened the Maserati 3200 GTA to distinguish it from the manual car, it was a typically thorough job, the engine being remapped to suit the four-speed automatic gearbox with an altered torque curve.

It was surprisingly warmly received, but then the 3200 was always meant to be more of a long-distance touring car rather than an out-and-out sportscar. Maserati sold a total of 2,689 manual cars, and 2,106 automatics.

Overview

Offered with just three previous keepers, this achingly pretty Maserati 3200 GTA comes with a magnificently full service history by Maserati and Ferrari dealers up to 38,727 miles and 2009, followed by Maserati/Ferrari specialist dealers (almost) annually up to the present day. 

The owner took his time searching for the very best example he could find, and after a very long search he found this one. Which is handy for all you fussy potential Maserati owners out there because he’s done all the hard work for you.

With the vendor for the past four years, it’s had a recent cambelt (its second in the 700 miles he’s owned it…) and a full service and is ready to go. Even the air-con works, so there’s none of this “just needs recharging” nonsense…

Exterior

The stunning red paintwork shows off the Maserati’s clean, unfussy lines perfectly, especially from the rear where the tail lights disappear into the car’s lines. Felicity Kendall used to regularly win the Rear of the Year competition, but that’s only because no-one entered this car…

The panels are free of ripples and damage, and the shut-lines are amazingly tight for an Italian car. It’s free of rust too, as well as scratches, stonechips and car-park dings. It really is one of the best we’ve ever seen and it belies its age; you’d never think it was knocking on the door of its third decade.

The (limited) chromework is in great condition and gleams like a new pin.

The current owner splashed out on a £600 full detail by 'celebrity' car-valeter Richard Tipper last year, and you can certainly tell when you see the water beading off it.

The 18-inch alloy wheels are in fine fettle and are shod with matching Toyo tyres. (Of course they are; no-one who’s looked after their car this well is going to fit cheap, mis-matched tyres, are they?)

We’d advise you to come as see us here at The Market headquarters in Abingdon to check the car out for yourselves. Not, we hasten to add, because that gives us an out but because we think you’ll be so pleasantly surprised by its condition - and the little details that are hard to appreciate fully in even the best photographs - that you’ll add another couple of thou to the amount you’re prepared to bid on it…

Interior

The cream leather interior is in fabulous condition, and proves that while Italian interiors might not be the most durable we’ve ever seen, a good one that’s been looked after is a thing of beauty even now.

The seats are free of rips, tears and other damage and appear to be unmarked bar a small area of wear on the outer bolster of the driver’s seat. This could be easily repaired, either as a DIY job or by entrusting it to a professional. The electric adjustment mechanism works as it should.

The tan carpets are in great condition too, as are the door cards, Alcantara headlining, and dashboard. A set of black Maserati over-mats will be included. 

The boot is as clean and tidy as the interior, and features a natty divider to keep your bits and bobs organised and rattle-free. There is an indoor cover too.

In fact, the only duff note are the Maserati-branded seat-belt covers, but we’re old-fashioned like that.

Mechanical

This is a rare beast, in that it has a full service history from reputable dealers. 

That, if nothing else, should help you sleep more soundly. It’s also had a cambelt in 2016 and 2019, plus a new throttle body in 2018.

Otherwise there’s not a lot to tell you, which is exactly how you’d want it to be. While Hoovie’s Garage and Tavarish might be great entertainment, the last thing you want to do is join in with them as they proudly boast of just how much is wrong with their supercars.

The engine bay is as neat and clean as any we’ve ever seen, part of the aforementioned detailing, and that beautiful red crackle finish stirs us in a way that few cars in this price range do.

History

The online MOT history shows nothing of concern whatsoever (and we mean nothing: it hasn’t incurred a single advisory since its records start in 2006. Not. A. Single. One.) and confirms the car’s low mileage. 

The car comes with a number of expired MOT certificates plus a sheaf of invoices and bills to confirm the recent work that has been done to it, along with a fully stamped service history book that also confirms the recent cambelt change. It also has a service history summary prepared by Foskers.

It also comes with three sets of keys (including the all-important red/brown one!), plus the original owner’s wallet containing the handbook, Becker Mexico radio instruction manual, and all the rest of the bumf that Maserati handed over when they joined its exclusive club.

The owner is also including a wad of expired tax discs spanning the period between 2003 and 2012.

Summary

As we’re among friends, we’re going to be honest and admit that buying a used Maserati is going to be one of the bravest moves you’re ever going to make. And yet, as one of our team can attest, we have this very conversation at least once a month, if you’re going to pull the trigger on one then this is definitely the example to do it with. Unmolested. Impeccably cared for. Freshly Serviced. Low Mileage. Low Owners. Italian. Rosso. Crazy. Not. To.

And it’s not like you’ll be risking the house, either. At a time when a contemporary Ferrari is fetching silly money, you could find yourself the owner of this 'mint' Maserati for only £9,500 - £13,000, which is bonkers, but for a very different reason.

Oh, and that automatic gearbox? We think it’s actually a far better choice than the manual that everyone will tell you that you need; this is a luxury, grand touring car and it needs the right ‘box if you’re going to cover continents comfortably.
