Background

The Land Rover has been around since 1948 with what is now known as the Series I. It was designed with farm and light industrial use in mind, with a steel box-section chassis and an aluminum body.

After the production of the Series I was such a success, the Series II and Series IIA were both equally as popular and were then followed by the Series III. It was in 1983 that Land Rover introduced the Defender which was known as the Land Rover 110 due to it’s 110 inch length of the wheelbase. The land Rover 90 followed a year later in 1984 with a wheelbase of 92.9 inches. We think you’ll agree that 90 sounds better.

Pretty much standard equipment on most farms, the Defender has been without doubt a massive success and nothing has really rivaled it in the 4x4 world. In 2007 Land Rover gave the Defender a makeover on the trim side of things, to meet growing demand for more creature comforts such as a CD player, leather seat option and alloy wheels. This was to give a more comfortable daily driving experience.

Overview

Just to make things crystal clear, this Land rover is classed as a category D Insurance loss, but the Defender was repairable, it was the insurance company that decided not to repair it.

Registered on 16th December 2010, the Land Rover Defender 90 TD stayed with it’s first owner until 24th September 2014, where, after the accident, it received the transformation you now see.

The list of parts fitted to transform the 90 is impressive and has been done with no expense spared. Most of the parts were fitted in 2014, some of which include the KBX Conversion in satin black to the wing tops and side intake, Remap making the 90 produce 170 bhp, Ultimate intercooler, panoramic side windows, Lowering springs, Heated Leather Recaro front seats with the embossed Twisted logo, Terrafirma shock absorbers, K&N Air filter, EGR valve delete, Stainless bolt kit, Led interior lighting, LED light conversion, Twisted powder coated wheels, Momo sports steering wheel, Brembo brake upgrade Turbo Technics S233 conversion and finally helping it breathe is a Terrafirma exhaust.

Exterior

There’s no disputing that this Land Rover certainly looks the part! Wider wheels that are powder coated in white are one of the first things that jump out at you as you look at the Defender, and hiding behind those are some nice red Brembo stoppers. The wheels have been shod in BF Goodrich All Terrain tyres, which are still like new.

The metallic green paintwork pops in the sun and is relatively scratch free.

There are a few stone chips on the front panel around the wing edges and just below the KBX light surrounds and LED lights and the odd small dink. The Defender letters on the bonnet edge have become slightly tarnished, but apart from that, nothing that really jumps out at you. All the lights to the front and rear have been upgraded with clear LED items.

Panel gaps are nice and equal all around the Land Rover. There are some side steps fitted that do have some surface corrosion on the edges although that could be easily addressed. The door mirror arms are showing some signs of corrosion under the powder coating. Again, this wouldn’t take much to sort out. The roof does appear to have a slight dent in it above the roof window on the drivers side.

Now, side windows are another thing to help make it stand out. They have been treated to the full panoramic look around to the rear door, which has also been tinted to match. The front door windows in a lighter tint do have some signs of slight bubbling to the drivers side.

The front wings have had the KBX chequer plate satin black fitted, along with the KBX Hi-Force wing vents. There is also another KBX vent fitted to the drivers side wing, together with the Turbo Technics badge to show they’ve worked their magic on the 90.

Interior

Inside, the Land Rover is a bit like stepping into a Bentley rather than a 4x4, with its full leather Recaro heated seats, which have been trimmed in brown with a black centre panel insert that has diamond stitching in matching brown thread. The door cards, arm rest and dashboard have received the same treatment along with the rear seats. The rears also fold down and lift up to the sides to still give a nice load area should you need it. Look up above you, and the headlining has been trimmed in Alcantara and finished with a leather panel to the centre with the lights which have been replaced with LED items. There is some very slight sagging to the headlining just by each roof window.

From the driver's seat you are faced with a sporty Momo steering wheel. The mileage showing on the odometer is currently 72,240, and there are no warning lights displayed. As far as we could tell everything is working correctly. Adding to the extras there is a Bluetooth Pioneer radio fitted enabling to connect and stream your music from your phone.

New door rubbers have been fitted for a nice draught free ride. The carpets are in lovely condition with some leather bound mats to match the seats. There are also some rubber Defender mats just in case your boots are grubby.

Mechanical

Underneath the Defender is nice and clean. There are some signs of surface corrosion to the suspension arms, springs and chassis, but this is only what you would expect on any vehicle of a similar age.

The defender 2.4cc Turbocharged diesel fires into life at the flick of the key and sounds just as it should. There are no untoward noises that shouldn’t be there. The engine bay is generally clean, just a little dusty from storage. There is some slight surface rust on the radiator cover which could be easily fixed with a quick sand and spray. Looking under the vehicle we didn't spot any leaks on the engine.

On the drivetrain side of things, the differential does have some signs of oil around it. That said, there doesn't appear to be any dripping from it, neither was there any evidence of any on the floor. The Defenders gear change is nice and smooth and with the remap pushing the 2.4cc to 170bhp, and a huge amount of torque, it will give you the grin factor.

History

The vendor purchased the Defender on 4th January 2016, which was shortly after the transformation into this unique 90 was complete. The changes to the vehicle were carried out after an unfortunate accident with the previous owner.

As already mentioned It was then that the Land Rover was subsequently written off by the insurance company, on the 21st December 2013, after they categorized it as a Category D Insurance loss. The vehicle was damaged, but it was repairable and sadly the insurer decided not to repair.

The Defender 90 was purchased back from the insurance company and in 2014, the work began transforming the Defender into a style using some of the elements used by the well known Land Rover tuning company Twisted.

You will be pleased to know that the Land Rover comes with a well documented history file that includes the original wallet, owner’s handbook and service booklet which holds 7 service stamps. Also included are the receipts for most of the modifications and parts used. The current MoT is certified until 26th July 2021. Two sets of keys are also present with remote key-fobs. The V5 is present and shows three previous keepers.

Summary

If you are into your 4x4’s, it's a pretty safe bet that everyone loves a Defender, and this one, without doubt, steps right up to the mark.

With styling elements from Twisted, it has been given the full treatment. To recap, Full leather Recaro seats, LED lights, Twisted wheels, 170bhp remap, Terrafirma exhaust, Panoramic side glass, KBX satin black vents and wing tops, plus much more.

Fully maintained, regardless of cost, low ownership and a huge history file, it certainly is an amazing opportunity to purchase a unique Defender.

We estimate it will bring in the region of £22,000 - £29,000.
