Background
The second generation Prelude, built between 1982 and 1987, marked something of a change for Honda. Its aerodynamic shape (aided by those lovely pop-up headlights and engines which were designed expressly to allow that low bonnet line) and large glass surface area, endowed the car with a sporty appearance and a light, airy feeling inside . Exciting? Not really, but ingenious? Yes, very. Charming? In spades.
It’s a lithe little thing too, weighing little more than a tonne in its purest form. This absence of weight translates into sparkling performance from its modest engine and more than respectable fuel economy. Exciting? Not really, but sensible? Oh yes.
So the Prelude was a clever car as well as a durable one; at a time when Britain could still remember some of the horrors that had poured out of British car factories in the seventies and early eighties, the little Honda was absurdly reliable – and remains so, as long as it’s been maintained properly. Exciting? Not really, but reliable? Of course…particularly if it’s been cared for like this one.
