Background

The Honda Gold Wing took the biking world by storm when it was announced in 1974. Here was a 998cc flat four, water-cooled touring machine of exquisite quality, which went on to become a bi-word for luxury touring and reliability. The Gold Wing (albeit now in 1800cc flat six configuration) continues to head up the Honda motorcycle range 47 years later.

Originally conceived as more of a sporting machine to rival the Japanese opposition from bikes such as the Kawasaki Z1, and the European BMW and Moto Guzzi competition, the ‘Wing soon found its niche as a smooth, stylish long-distance cruiser, selling particularly well in America. It used advanced automotive technology with features such as belt-driven overhead cams, shaft drive and triple disk brakes, all very innovative for a motorcycle in 1975. Although quite a heavy machine, it was powerful and torquey. It was also no slouch, with a top speed nudging 125mph.

Overview

This 1979 UK supplied 'KZ' 998cc mk2 model is showing 33,275 miles, believed to be genuine, having only covered around 2000 miles in the last 15 years. It has ‘Comstar’ wheels, and some further refinements from the original model, such as additional instrumentation mounted on the (dummy) fuel tank, a non-OEM exhaust and slightly milder cams for a more torquey feel. It’s fair to say that the mk2 models aren’t quite as collectible as the original 1975/76 versions, but then they are more affordable and offer a very similar (in fact slightly better) riding experience.

Exterior

Only from the early eighties did the Gold Wings start to be offered from the factory with fairings, screens, panniers, top boxes and every conceivable extra, increasing comfort but also weight (on an already heavy machine). Original models such as this in ‘naked’ spec are rare as most have been adorned with questionable after-market equipment.

Less is definitely more on an early Gold Wing. The only changes from standard on the bike being offered for sale are quality Hagon replacement rear shock absorbers, providing a much better ride than original units, and a quality Giuliari ‘king and queen’ style seat for added comfort. It also has the sensible upgrade of braided steel brake hoses for enhanced stopping power and Fiamm (proper loud) dual horns! It comes with the standard Honda tool kit in its original tool roll, stashed in the handy storage compartment where the fuel tank would be on a conventional bike.

Interior

The Gold Wing has a feel and sound all of its own. Initial impressions are of uncanny smoothness and sophistication, with a very surprising turn of speed and it’s hard to believe these bikes are over 40 years old. These bikes will run the quarter mile in 12.7 seconds and the flat four motor and low-slung fuel tank make it feel much more agile than appearances would suggest.

Mechanical

Honda has built its reputation for engineering excellence on machines like this, and although the modern Gold Wings are on another level when it comes to technology, there is a something very engaging about an unfaired analogue cruiser like this that makes the ride so much more engaging. You are also part of a huge family when you ride a Gold Wing, with riders of the modern bikes having a huge affinity for these earlier models.

History

The vendor has had this in dry storage for all of his ownership. He’s had a mechanic check it over and fit a new battery in order to prepare it for auction and it is MoT’d until April 2022.  The winning bidder would probably be wise to fit new tyres before any distance riding is planned.

Summary

This bike has excellent black paintwork with gold pin striping, and the chrome work retains its original thick Honda lustre. There are one or two marks commensurate with its age and mileage, and it has aftermarket exhaust silencers. It would benefit from some mile recommissioning, but all told this is a good honest example of an appreciating classic Honda.

We estimate this bike will sell for between £2,000 - £6,000.
