Background

Ford has an excellent history of producing rally cars, adapted for the road. The Lotus Cortina in the 1960s was followed by countless Escorts in numerous guises.

The 1980s saw the arrival of the Cosworth generation and magic was worked on both Escorts and Sierras. These iconic cars are even more desirable now as so many were thrashed, crashed and trashed.

The Ford Focus burst on to the motoring scene in 1998 and what a departure it was from the rather staid Escort Mk 5! Striking modern looks were one thing, but the way it drove was a revelation. Here was a workaday hatch that offered genuine thrills behind the wheel.

It was only a matter of time before a hot version appeared and in 2002 the long-awaited Focus RS was finally launched. Better late than never!

The Mk 2 Focus RS burst onto the scene in January 2009. The headline figures of 300bhp and 324lb/ft were enough on their own to excite, but coupled with the striking looks, the motoring press at the time went crazy.

They weren’t disappointed when they got behind the wheel too. Although lacking four-wheel drive, a Quaife limited slip differential was capable of taming all the power from that tuneful five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged engine.

Performance figures from EVO magazine suggested that a 0-62mph time of under six seconds was possible and the top speed a heady 163mph.

A well-equipped interior completed the exciting package.

The Focus is now on its 4th incarnation and sadly the RS is no more. A dying breed perhaps as the car manufacturers rush towards electrification.

We think the Mk2 is likely to become the most collectable of all and we are delighted to bring a wonderful example to market.

Overview

Our car rolled down the production line in January 2010 and was delivered to a serial fast Ford owner. He kept the car for eight years, using the car sparingly. After upgrading to the latest model, our seller bought the car and has enjoyed it over the past three years. He spent over two years looking for the right car.

It is reluctantly offered for sale, but before you cry any tears, he does have another 14 lovely cars in his collection. It is time, he says, to let someone else enjoy this blue speed machine.

It should be noted that the car has both Luxury Packs fitted, so expect to find dual-zone climate control, auto headlights and wipers, rear parking sensors, keyless go, DAB radio, Sony CD player, an upgraded infotainment system with rear-view camera and touchscreen satellite navigation.

Our seller also comments that the car is never anything less than thrilling to drive, whether that’s popping to the shops our blasting along a favourite B-road. Astonishing handling, a thrilling five-cylinder soundtrack and looks to die for, we are really getting rather excited!

Exterior

Performance Blue is the colour to have. Striking, bold and dazzling. The car has clearly been looked after and garaged when not in use.

There are a few scratches we should mention on the roof and the boot lid. Nothing that would worry us, but the perfectionist might wish to deal with them.

The front splitter has a chunk taken out of it, which is a shame.

The alloy wheels do show a few signs of use and are clad in matching high performance Pirelli Sport Contact 6 tyres. As we always like to mention, branded tyres fitted to all wheels is a clear sign of an excellent owner.

Interior

The racing Recaro seats dominate the interior, and they are as supportive and comfortable as they look. Hugging in all the right places, they keep you firmly in place when pressing on. They are in good order too.

Rear seat occupants also benefit from decent seats and we love the mix of colours and materials. They help to brighten up the space.

Carpets and mats are in good order, though perhaps a quick steam clean may well be in order.

The boot is clean, but the carpeting does show signs of use. Make sure all luggage is strapped down, we say.

As previously mentioned, the Focus RS is well equipped, so can play the luxury car role if required so to do.

Mechanical

A look through our pictures of the car’s underside shows nothing of any concern. There is evidence of slight surface corrosion to some of the components. We would be inclined to give it all a damn good clean and get busy with the underseal. Prevention is better than cure.

You will also spot the Mountune exhaust system, fitted by our seller.

The star of course is that wonderous five-cylinder engine, a sight to behold when lifting the bonnet. It all looks to be in fine order as befits a low mileage car which has been well maintained by careful and knowledgeable owners.

History

We always like to see a fully stamped service book and that is very much the case here.

Our seller had a major service carried out in September 2019 costing a not inconsiderable £1,403. The car has covered only 700 miles since.

Amongst the work carried out was the all-important cam belt and water pump change. Plugs, filters, oil etc were also changed. The invoice is included in the picture section.

The RS was MoTed in January of this year and unsurprisingly passed with no advisories.

Further reassurance for any prospective purchasers comes in the form of a recent RAC History Check which shows nothing of any concern.

Summary

Although undoubtedly becoming extremely collectable, the Mk 2 Focus RS is eminently usable as an everyday car. Drop the kids off to school one minute, hoon around a race track the next, this feisty Ford will do both with ease and everything in between.

It is not a car for the shy and retiring, and everyone will want to race you. However, relax in the knowledge that very little, shy of a supercar, will keep up if you are really trying.

So, how much will the pretty, performance Ford fetch? We think somewhere around £23,000 to £30,000 is about right, reflecting the car’s low mileage, excellent condition, and ownership history. Buy now and enjoy, before electric cars take over the world.

Viewing is always encouraged, within government guidelines of course.
