Background

American muscle cars, love them or hate them, they are never for the shy and retiring. UK motorists are probably more familiar with the Ford Mustang, which has been on sale here in right hand drive form for around five years. It has undoubtedly been a great success, with many embracing the chance to own a powerful car with character before we are all confined to worthy but dull electric cars.

However, if it’s exclusivity you are after, then a Dodge Challenger is what you need. And why do things by half measures, what you really need is an SRT8!

This retro-styled muscle car from across the pond has been breathed upon by Dodge’s Street and Racing Technology department. They also engineer the Viper and that’s quite a car.

The highlight of any muscle car lies under the bonnet, so the 6.4-litre Hemi V8 is not likely to disappoint. Pushing out some 470bhp (and with 470lb ft of torque), there’s enough get up and go to catapult the Challenger from rest to 60mph in just 4.8 seconds. Bear in mind it’s no lightweight, tipping the scales as it does at nearly two tonnes.

With a deserted runway at your disposal, or scant regard for your driving licence, top speed is somewhere north of 180mph.

V8 engines are renowned for there loud and tuneful soundtrack and in this regards the SRT8 is more than up to the task.

America is the land of straight roads and we have already established that the SRT8 can rise to this particular challenge! What may surprise is the car’s ability to deal with the twisty stuff, so there is fun to be had on UK roads.

Brembo brakes provide the stopping power and the ride at speed is surprisingly comfortable, even allowing for wide 20-inch wheels.

Overview

Our car rolled down the production line in early 2013 in Canada and was immediately dispatched to Kuwait where it has spent most of its life. Sold and maintained by the local Dodge dealership and with the mileage approaching 127,000kms, the car has clearly been used and enjoyed.

The car was owned for many years by a police officer before being bought last year by a lawyer, working in the motor trade. He had the car thoroughly inspected before purchase, keen as he was to buy the best Challenger available.

Having now moved on to his next car, his brother in the UK became the next owner and we are now offering the car on his behalf.

The car arrived in the UK in February and immediately underwent its Individual Vehicle Approval Test (IVA) and was MoT'd. It passed the latter with no advisories and therefore is now completely road legal in the UK.

The car has had some choice upgrades in its life. A new DDR induction kit is fitted along with a Borla exhaust and we are reliably informed that it now screams like a wailing banshee! Ideal for upsetting the neighbours.

Also fitted are a rather snazzy set of Hellcat forged alloys, a lovely addition.

Standard equipment level is high, with electric heated driver’s seat and heated steering wheel amongst the perhaps unexpected luxuries.

The seller tells us the car drives really well and is unlikely to disappoint the lucky new owner. It could be you!

Exterior

The Challenger is a big car, designed for wide American roads. The black paintwork helps to disguise the car’s bulk and, in our opinion, adds an air of menace. You will be noticed driving around in this car.

Black is a notoriously unforgiving colour, but we think the eight-year-old paint has stood the test of time rather well. It is not immaculate, but with a good detail valet we think it will really look the part.

Worth pointing out is a scratch on the rear bumper and some dirt/corrosion visible on the sunroof runners when it is opened.

We rather like those Hellcat alloys with the red accent, and they appear to be in fair condition. New Kinforest tyres were fitted all round last November, though we are not familiar with the make they are a Chinese brand which are highly recommended in Kuwait due to the heat and speed requirements.

Interior

Up front you will find cosseting sports seats, monogrammed with SRT in case you’ve forgotten what you are driving, however unlikely that may be.

Covered in a mixture of leather and Alcantara, there is some evidence of wear. We would be inclined to treat the leather and gently clean the fabric.

There are marks here and there on some of the plastic trim, and this can be seen in our detailed photographs. Some may clean off, others may be harder to improve.

The carpets are a little grubby in places, nothing a good clean should not sort out.

In the boot, the upper trim looks to be coming loose and again a little spruce up would not go amiss.

The rubber seal is also split and may need replacing.

Mechanical

That Hemi V8 motor is quite a sight and the engine compartment itself looks to be in good order, as befits a car that has been well maintained.

The bonnet catch looks as though it could need a clean or some paint and the sound deadening material on the underside of the bonnet is not in the best shape. Neither should prove difficult to rectify.

The car has lived its life in a warm and sunny climate and therefore a look underneath reveals no visible trace of any corrosion. Signs of a dry sandy environment are evident, and perhaps a clean-up might be in order.

If the car is to be used all year round, we might be tempted to carry out some undersealing to help preserve the car’s condition.

The car is showing an EML light, which the vendor believed was due to a faulty coil pack. He ordered the part & arranged for a mechanic to fit it at our HQ, but it was confirmed that the light is caused by a fault oxygen sensor. An easy fix, and the engine runs & sounds as it should.

The exhaust looks to be in good order.

History

The car passed its first UK MoT without any advisories and will not need testing again until February of next year.

There is much evidence of regular servicing, mostly with the Dodge main agent in Kuwait. Check the extensive documentation in our photographs for the fullest of details.

We can tell you that last year new suspension bushes were fitted, as well as the aforementioned set of new tyres. The brake pads were also changed so hopefully this racy car will now stop as well as it goes.

The differential oil was also changed and a full service carried out as well as a gearbox service. All this was done by a main dealer with a total spend of over £950.

Summary

This is a rare car in the UK which in our opinion adds to the appeal. With jaw-dropping retro looks, a Hemi V8 with huge amounts of power and a soundtrack loud enough to wake the dead, we anticipate this car will attract a lot of interest.

There are a few cosmetic issues we would choose to address, but this does appear to be a car that has been well maintained mechanically.

We estimate it will sell for between £17,500 and £23,500, somewhat of a bargain. Summer’s coming, time to go cruising, so put in a bid when you’ve finished perusing!
