Background

If you’re looking for hair-raising straight-line thrills with a thumping great V8 soundtrack and enough road presence to encourage any lane-huggers out the way with ease, then you need an authentic American muscle car. More specifically, you need this 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T.

The third-generation Dodge Challenger has been in production since 2008, having undergone numerous extensive facelifts and trim changes during its 13 years of production.

In 2015, the retro-styled challenger underwent a significant facelift to bring the styling up-to-date with the design of the time, but even today - some six years later - it still looks excellent and commands the kind of attention most British or German performance cars can only dream of.

Of course, the heart and soul of any so-called muscle car is the engine, which, in this case, takes the form of a sizeable 5.7-litre HEMI V8 engine, producing 375bhp to the crankshaft & flywheel.

Should you wish, you’d be able to push this American behemoth on to a top speed of 170mph, though we’d strongly suggest doing so on a runway or closed road if you want to keep your driving license!

Overview

This particular example has spent the majority of its life in the dry state of Texas, having been supplied by Ancira Dodge of San Antonio, Texas and originally registered on 04 February 2015.

From the factory, this particular Challenger was specified with the following options:

• R/T 5.7-litre HEMI V8 engine

• Torqueflite eight-speed automatic transmission

• 20-inch wheels

• Dual rear exhaust with bright tips

• Body-coloured spoiler

• Projector fog lights

• Upgraded performance brakes

• Reversing camera

• Cruise control

• Dual-zone climate control

• Cylinder deactivation (when cruising, the vehicle will run on four cylinders to save fuel)

• Xenon headlights

• Bluetooth phone connection with USB input.

After spending a number of years in Texas and racking up the miles, the vehicle was sold at auction with 88,339 miles on the odometer in February 2020 and was subsequently imported into the UK, being registered on UK roads on 01 October 2020.

During the import process, the vehicle was prepared for UK testing, registered and transported by Specialised Shipping Ltd, with the invoice pertaining to this work totalling £2,084.28 being included in the gallery below.

Having coveted the car for years ever since seeing it appear on Top Gear the vendor purchased the car with intentions of using it for weekend shopping trips and car shows, though of course the latter was somewhat prevented due to the strange goings-on we all experienced during 2020. Having cared for the car throughout their ownership, the vendor has said they will be “very sorry” to see the car go, and we can certainly understand why.

Exterior

A sign of a good automotive design is a car that looks great even standing still, and its certainly fair to say this ’15 Challenger R/T certainly ticks that box.

With over 90,000 miles on the odometer, this giant of American motoring has clearly been used and enjoyed as Dodge intended, though this does mean there are a few wear-and-tear marks visible on the bodywork.

Specifically, there is a minor mark on the nearside front wing, a dent on the nearside door, marks to the edges of the driver’s door, wear around the fuel filler cap, a dent on the offside rear wing just behind the door and a crease on the roof line above the passenger door. The two nearside wheels have also been kerbed, and would benefit from a refurbishment.

All of these items have been detailed in the photo gallery below for you to make your own assessments, along with evidence of a few stone chips which are to be expected on a car of this age, mileage and performance.

Wear-and-tear aside, this is still an incredibly good-looking and imposing vehicle. The paintwork is in generally great condition throughout, while the panel lines are all even and precise. The standard suspension has also been upgraded to 30mm lowering springs, which help accentuate the squared-off and aggressive lines of this Challenger, though the original suspension is included with the vehicle.

Park this V8-powered icon up anywhere and watch the onlookers flock to it like bees to pollen.

Interior

Inside, this R/T shrugs off its age and mileage with apparent ease, with everything feeling lovely and tight and in very good shape given the distance its owners have covered sat in the wonderfully supportive driver’s seat.

Speaking of the seats, the two front seats are in excellent shape with only slight commensurate wear to the bolsters and bases, while the rear seats are in even better shape. The carpets, too, are in good nick, while the headliner remains nice and taught with no rips or sagging in sight.

The inner door seals are showing some marks, as are the door cards, though a replacement passenger door seal is included with the sale of the vehicle. There is also the usual ‘patina’ on the high-traffic areas such as the steering wheel, centre console and switch gear, while the cover for the sunglasses cubby on the roof is missing.

The boot is in impressively good shape, though some of the side trim is starting to come away from the body.

Put your foot on the brake, press the starter button and hear the 5.7-litre HEMI roar into life ahead of you. While the majority of the systems appear to be working perfectly, we noted that the cold air-conditioning temperature adjustment on the driver’s side is inoperable, while the ‘sport’ mode button also appears to be inoperable.

Mechanical

Thanks to living the majority of its life in the hot, dry climate of Texas state, this Challenger is in fine fettle underneath, with only the most minimal evidence of surface ‘bloom’ noted during our visual inspection. This is also backed up by the MOT history of the vehicle, which shows no notes of any corrosion-related issues.

Keen-eyed viewers will note in the gallery that the lower plastic sill trims are damaged, though this is hidden during everyday use and do not affect the structure of the car in any way, being a purely aesthetic feature.

Under the bonnet, the 5.7-litre R/T HEMI V8 takes up a staggering amount of room, though there’s not much to see on account of the expansive plastic engine bay covers. That being said, there are no warning signs of any issues that we noted, and there is no evidence of any oil or fluid leaks.

The rude health of the Challenger noted during our visual inspection was also backed up by our short test drive, with the V8 engine firing into life with ease and settling into a surprisingly refined idle. Even when cold, the eight-speed Torqueflite transmission shifted smoothly and without any user input, going through the gears and reversing with no notable issues, noises or vibrations.

History

Included with the vehicle is the Texas title of ownership from its time stateside, along with a copy of the CarFax report which notes reported accident damage and an outstanding recall, though the former of these was not noted to be structural, loss-inducing or resulting in the deployment of the airbags.

This means that this is not a so-called “salvage title” car, and having spoken to the vendor the damage amounted to “around $500” and was purely cosmetic. In addition to this, the outstanding recall work was taken care of in the UK by American Vehicle Services of Braintree, Essex.

From its time in the UK, the paperwork from the UK conversion and registration process is present, along with a dynamometer print out stating the vehicle is producing 360bhp at the wheel which we’ve been told translates to 403bhp at the crank, the V5 ownership document showing 0 prior owners on account of being imported, and numerous invoices from work carried out to ready the car for UK use.

Summary

Muscle cars will always be somewhat of a curiosity here in the UK, where we don’t quite seem to appreciate the ‘gas-guzzling’ high-displacement V8 engine with the same enthusiasm that our American brethren do.

That means that the only way we get a ‘genuine’ muscle car experience on UK shores will be to import one from the US, and this 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T is a fine example that is already registered for UK use, ready for the next owner to enjoy a slice of Americana on UK roads.

In fine condition throughout with several spare parts included and - most importantly - in rude mechanical health, this HEMI-engined brute would make an excellent addition to any American car enthusiasts collection, and we estimate it to fetch in the region of £24,000- £33,000 so be sure to turn on your notifications to be reminded when this auction goes live.
