Background

The 3.6-litre, 221bhp Daimler was the upmarket version of the already high-end Jaguar XJ40. As such it’s fast, quiet, luxurious, and ever-so-slightly less Nigel Farage than the Jag.

It’ll hit 62mph in just over eight seconds and waft its way to a top speed of more than 140mph. Sure, the fuel consumption might cripple you, but as it’s made of iron girders and so weighs almost two tonnes, it’ll be the only thing that will; the XJ can still hold its own in an accident. A 1996 survey by the British government earned it the title of "Safest Car in Britain.

Overview

The current owner bought the car at auction and used for a period but does not have a garage and as we head to winter it forces the sale of what looks to be quite a tidy example of the breed.

Exterior

The XJ40’s main enemy is rust, something this example seems to have dodged, as you can see from the photographs.

The panel gaps look nice and even and the alloys look to be in good shape. Of course, we expect there’ll be the odd rust spot to take care of, but then that’s the British way, isn’t it?

Interior

It’s got cloth seats, which the well-read among you will know was the late Alan Clark’s favourite seat material.

It’s also got illuminated rear picnic tables and single rears seats, ‘cos it’s the Jaguar XJ40’s more luxurious cousin, isn’t it?

It’s also got more wood than your average post-industrial age Amazonian forest and more electricity coursing through the myriad and many electrically operated accessories than your local sub-station.

Say what you will about British engineering, but no one does Old School luxury like us.

Mechanical

The MOT ran out last month and the owner says he will put a full new MOT on it for the next owner. The online MOT history check doesn’t show any nasties, which has got to be worth something, hasn’t it?

History

We don't know much about this car, but when you’re buying an old Daimler, is any amount of paperwork going to be enough to reassure you?

No, of course it isn’t. So you need to go and take a look for yourself and rely on your years of experience and gut instinct. In fact, forget that last one; if your gut instinct isn’t telling you to run away screaming when you look at any car over 30 years old then it probably isn’t terribly reliable!

Summary

This is an original, un-messed-with example of a Daimler that is much more likely to go right than wrong, so why not go along and take a look for yourself?

The owner needs the space and as prices are starting to rise, examples like this are fetching upwards of £3,000 and the reserve is set, as ever well below half this.
