Background
The concept of the SUV, or Sports Utility Vehicle, has been around for a while but it is perhaps only in the 1990s that the concept gained mainstream popularity. Our roads are now chock-a-block with such vehicles and like them or hate them, they are here to stay.
Space for the family, a raised driving position and quite often four-wheel drive are the appealing factors. Sales are increasing year on year and in the process the traditional saloon and estate car are seeing a sharp decline.
BMW’s X5 was one of the first to bring a little luxury and sporting prowess to the sector. Added to the German marque’s top build quality was their tried and tested 4x4 system. More importantly however the X5 was much better to drive than its rather stodgy competitors.
In 2008 some bright spark in Munich saw the opportunity to increase sales still further and fill a hitherto untapped niche and thus the SAC was born – yes, that’s Sports Activity Coupe!
Raised seating position, 4x4 traction, spacious interior, but coupe looks which shout go-getter rather than domestic bliss.
Despite makeovers in 2014 and 2020, the overall shape has hardly changed and older X6 models still look very stylish and relevant and this example in this timeless silver colour is no exception.
