Background
The M135i was designed as an everyday, mass-production hatchback equivalent of the 1M ‘halo car.’ Produced between 2012 and 2014, the M135i offers staggering straight-line performance without brash body kits, exaggerated styling or the massive ‘snouts’ seen on modern-day M-cars.
Offering 315bhp on tap from the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine, the M135i follows the age-old BMW design principle of being an “iron fist in a velvet glove” - save for the twin rear tailpipes and badging, drivers and passers-by would be hard-pushed to identify this hot hatch from a regular 1-series at a glance.
To some, this may be a bad thing, but, for many, this is one of the key selling points of the M135i: The ability to fly under the radar. There’s also all the practicality of the standard 1-Series on offer here, meaning this M-car can do everything you’d want a daily hatchback to do, but will give you a wicked grin whenever you press the ‘loud pedal’ and exploit all those silky-smooth German ponies hidden under the bonnet.
