Background
Only built between 1989 and 1991, the BMW 318iS has always been held in high regard. The M42 16-valve, four-cylinder, fuel-injected engine develops 136bhp and 129lb/ft of torque, endowing the car with performance that is strong rather than startling. However, many enthusiasts think that the free-revving, lightweight engine suits the nature of the car better than the inline ‘six’ of the 325iS (it’s a 100lbs lighter too…) and are willing to sacrifice some performance to get it.
The BMW 318iS features sports suspension (which means M3-spec springs, uprated dampers and thicker front and rear anti-roll bars), front vented and solid rear discs, power steering, Getrag five-speed manual gearbox, de-chromed exterior trim, sports seats, an M-tech steering wheel and a leather gear knob and gaiter.
The BMW 318iS has been called the ‘baby M3’ thanks to its two-door styling, sub-10 second 0-62mph time and a top speed of 125mph. But, like the M3, the real joy is in its handling, which is sublime thanks to the uprated suspension and almost perfect front/rear weight distribution. This makes it the perfect modern classic for the road and track.
