Background
The Bentley R Type might languish in the history books as the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn’s less successful brother, but to look at it in terms of sales volume would be a mistake.
Because the Bentley’s straight-six 4.6-litre, twin-carb engine (the Silver Dawn made do with just the one carburettor) produced 130bhp, enough to push it well past 100mph after notching up a sub-14 seconds 0-60mph time: the R Type was a properly quick car for its time, something its owner would endorse: “Performance is impressive for almost two tons of 1950’s motor car”.
However, Bentley never forgot that its primary role was to soothe and cosset the driver and passengers, making the R Type one of the very nicest ways to waft away a sunny Sunday afternoon.
